Microsoft makes a lot more than Windows... A lot more...

Windows is not a company, Windows is computer software MADE by Microsoft. How could you not know that?!

Can you read english? Where exactly did I say that Windows was a freakin company!? I was saying that Microsoft makes many many products, not just their OS, Windows, sheesh!!

Microsoft won't die. There will always be people who are new to computers. Microsoft owns that market.

If you've only been using Linux for a week, you can't really, REALLY hate Microsoft. Ah well, atleast you /. :-)

See, the problem is, that Microsoft is NOT that bad, and they're definitely not "falling apart", it seems almost like propoganda to suggest the company is in any kind of financial trouble.

Why...what's the big deal? I can understand hating Internet Explorer, but Microsoft is not that bad. A world with Microsoft is better off than a world without it. It's very likely that the world will always be running practically homogenous computers, making whatever system, *nix or otherwise, the target. I'll agree that the Linux kernel is superior, but not for the average end-user.

Can you imagine technical support, with hundreds of millions of Linux users, coming from a Windows enviroment? Windows, at the current point and time, is simply easier to use. (For most people)

There are multitude reasons to hate Microsoft:

* They created an Operating System containing more security holes than a colander subjected to several close-range shotgun blasts, and then used unethical and possibly illegal methods to leverage that system into a monopoly position. This was irresponsible - if it weren't for this incompetence, viruses, fraud, identity theft, and almost all of the risks associated with using a personal computer today would be far less prevalent.

* Their market strategy is based upon maintaining that monopoly, not through innovation and consistent, quality product design, but by crushing smaller companies which could possibly threaten their position.

* They BOUGHT Bungie out! I mean, really, if it weren't for Microsoft, the whole "Sell-out" debate wouldn't event exist!

* They create file "standards", such as WMA, which are in most cases recognised to be of lesser quality to the actual industry standards, such as AAC. To make matters worse, they try to force smaller companies in the industry to adopt Microsoft's proprietary formats, even though the alternative standard is usually cheaper or even free to use in products. To use a case in point, how many digital music players actually use Dolby's industry standard (it has been recognised as such) AAC format? I know of one: the iPod. How many use Microsoft's inferior WMA format? I don't need to answer that one. The only serendipity of this situation is that the iPod has been so successful - one of the few times Microsoft's monopoly power hasn't achieved its goal.

* They fabricate public fears about Open Source software so that consumers don't "jump ship". Despite that Unix-based Operating Systems are far more secure than Windows, Microsoft has spread the belief that Windows is a safer choice. And don't talk about Linux's lack of user-friendliness. Linux is not the only Unix-based option. You may not know that Mac OS X is based upon a version of BSD UNIX. Heck, in a characteristic show of Microsoftian double-speak, the belated Longhorn project will be based upon a flavour of Unix.

I could go on, but it's been pretty well documented elsewhere.

As for whether Microsoft is "dying" or not, I must admit that I remain sceptical. It's not the first time that someone has come up with the idea that the Evil Empire of the North-West US is in trouble. Over at Applelust.com, Joe Carson ran a series of articles he titled "Twilight of Empire" in his All Mac Considered column. That series hasn't been updated since October 2003.

But we can always hope, I suppose.

The fact that Microsoft hasn't really done anything noticable recently as far as new products remind me of a stereotypical film moment.

And yet Macs are even easier to use... If I didn't like my PC games so much, I would probbrabbly be on a Mac right now. They are nice machines!

Yo Ben, are you a die-hard Linux user?

I got a disc with a version of Linux that i have yet to check out cuz I'm curious as to what it has to offer.

if you had to convince someone to use linux instead of windows, what would you say to them? (without mentioning the iron steriod-induced grip on the market by the Evil Axis known as Microsoft)

No. I don't have a flying clue what I'm doing with it. I have it installed on a dual-boot for my comp. But my friend is a "die-hard Lunix user" and he can do amazing things with it. I'll get ya some screenshots eh?

Yes, those are open terminals

Just another screenshot, shows some menus and stuff

Them two screenshots are from the same distribution of linux, which just shows how cusomizable it is...

Not that I now how to do any of that stuff.

I'm still a beginner.

Read the first paragraph... "This bag of tricks is mostly subjective, some of it no doubt unconscious, and we constantly test it against experience, most of it bad. That is, every time we get suckered into writing an upbeat story about an evil, incompetent or doomed company, we swear we will never make that mistake again -- then we scrutinize where we went wrong and what warning signals we missed." Its not going to happen...

True...

But they are trying to control way too much.

This is what I don't get: Why do people hate/detest tings that are sucessful?

Microsoft found its market and dominated.
People hate it.
The New England Patriots win back-to-back Super Bowls.
People hate it.
The Yankees are very sucessful.
People hate it.

I don't fricken' understand why. If you became wildly sucessful at something, would you want to be hated for that one reason? It just makes no bloody sense!

Well the Yankees are all that is wrong with baseball. I really wouldn't hate them if they didn't bloat their payroll year after year. I love teams like the Twins who put out a competitive team year after year with a 50 million dollar payroll or so.
