That's what makes it even worse, I know much more about computers than my dad does. I really know Macs...but I'm decent with Windows too. I'm gonna ask him to let me look throught the settings on his account when he gets home, and I'll look for that power user thing.

Yeah, tell him to get some spyware removal and virus protection, unless he really thinks you are going to install some rouge active x app that will take over the PC, but you wouldn't do that, would you?

tell him i said so.... lol

I think he's too paranoid. I download lots of things and nothing happens to my computer.

Yeah, our old computer got screwed because my sisters download a bunch of garbage. That's why he's so paranoid. But I'll talk it over with him, and try and convince him that I can have priveleges and not screw things up. Really, you have to try and screw things up as far as viruses go. They don't just come with anything, lol.

I'm not much of a PC expert, and I'm having some trouble and thought maybe someone here could help me out. My dad's a little overly cautious about viruses and stuff, so he's made us all limited accounts in XP. This significantly reduces your abilities with the computer, you can't even install new programs. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way around this, and maybe I could install programs somehow...there's a few things, that I would really like to install, but my dad won't even think about making me an administrator. If anyone knows, help would be appreciated.

If your computer is a single computer and not part of an intranet then the is no need for a ****** account system, it just clogs up the damn RAM. If you are afraid of viruses get an anti-virus program and keep it running 24-7. The only way to deal with viruses (once you got them) is to quarantin them and deleate all infected files. The best way to avoid viruses is to not get them! They nomally come as attachments to E-mail or as trogens in downloads... Make scaning all files a regular process; from external sorces to your main computer, including all external storage systems (CDs,DVD,floppies etc.) and downloads, E-mail. Delete all suspected files!

All trogens, worms and hacking programs are ether inbeded in .zip, .exe and .dll files, SCAN THESE!!!

Hackers can be kept out by fire walls. KEEP FIRE WALLS ON AT ALL TIMES When on the internet and the intranet.

Hope it helps.

I am glad I could help, the other guy up above is right about alot of stuff..

Have your virus scanner running, I can't tell you how many times I tried downloading something that seemed a bit fishy, and BAM! Trojan detected before I even upzip or run and exe. that is what you need to fear.

Also, those pop up's that ask you to install crap... don't do it unless you know the source to be valid, they will install hidden plug-ins to internet explorer that can only be removed through the registry, programs like spy-bot and ad-aware can scan and remove them for you if that happens.

peace.

I have it the other way round. I have the administrator account, and my parents have limited user accounts.
But Windows XP is based on NT, and thus takes it security very seriously.

Sometimes, that is the better way to have it, most adults don't know much about PC's.
