My two cents:
First of all, there is NO DOUBTING THE PISTOLS SUPERIORITY IN HALO. It is the most well-rounded gun, having a decent fire rate with decent damage and decent range. People realized just how good it was and started using it. It has no real shortcomings, as all aspects of it are decent.
However, people treat it as a god weapon, and it is not so. While the pistol can decimate, it takes a whackload of practise and steady aim. There are other good guns too, and the game never "revolved" around the pistol. It was simply a "gun for all seasons", if you will, as rarely would you find a situation where you regretted taking the pistol. Still, it is not the centerpiece of Halo. If you ask me, if a game revolves around a certain weapon, it's not a very good game. To me, the game's centerpiece was it's two-weapon style, its sleek controls and intense firefights as a result of the recharging shields (Legendary in both Halo and Halo 2 is the most fun thing I have ever done).
So, to sum it up, the M6D was good, but people whine and fondle it way too much about it.
