We all know it's a near-perfect combination of the elements of shooters that drives this game(I hope), but what really makes this game's gameplay more addicting than the sequels?

No trolling please.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

no idea, maybe because it is a little more real or just everything is unkown...or maybe the grpahics draw us in even if they are now waaay outdated.

I think the plot is more successful because it is not set to an epic scale. There is no "saving the universe" goal but rather you're just one awesome dude on a mysterious world and the only thing you need to do is work out what in the hell is happening.

Sometimes when I look at the moon at night, my mind embraces the thought of a love so vivid and true that I almost believe it is real. Then, due to my delusions, I am forced back into reality and begin to indulge myself in real life vices such as chocolates and German board games to get that once natural high.

The intricate story and details are what make Halo: CE one of the most enjoyable and revolutionary games of it's time.

Its a game where sometimes the due the atmosphere (music) it gives me, I am unable to decipher if I am playing some video game or watching a full featured movie.

It's difficult to even comprehend why Halo is what it is. Maybe it's because it's what Video Games are supposed to be. Halo is the example. It's got everything.

Right on.
(Intricate engine & concept excellence aside,) Your goals in each mission were simplistic and clear. The big picture stayed in the background.

Can you believe it?

The Campaign has a lot of replayability compared to Halo 2 and 3.

  • 06.27.2008 1:15 PM PDT

The Campaign from this game wasn't long, but wasn't short. The difficulty was right on, as well.

You are absolutely right on the count of the "epic scale".

Another part of the game is the way the Campaign flows. It's fairly linear, but you get many ways to approach any situation, and they rarely turn out the same twice.

It was the audio accompanyment that got to me.
Think 343 Guilty Spark (The Level). It synced up perfectly with the Flood.

QFT

and the game is a classic

...And so the hero crawled through the fissure on the surface of Tyr. There, the lone Dwarf stared into the cold, dark eyes of Soulblighter...The fiend hefted his blade over his shoulder as a flock of raven took upon his form...

-TBG-

Comparing it to other shooters, I loved that vast battlefields Halo CE brought. The level Halo was a perfect example. The weapons in CE were also fun to use. The Assault Rifle was very unique in my opinion and very fun to attack with. The graphics were a little outdated, but the color is what drew me in. They're was a vast amount of color and details used in each of the different levels. With other shooters, this one actually gives you a cinematic experience during it's cutsceens. Many shooters have only one type of enemy, with mabey a different gun for each. Halo's enemies had unique AI's for each of them. Elites were always to berserker ones, ready to go into battle. Grunts were always the followers and likely to run away when the Elites were dead. Jackals were those that always got the player fustrated due to their shields and plasma pistols. The Flood were great, because each form was different and very violent and creepy.

The graphics were simple and very clear. The maps were the best of the trilogy. The weapons were balanced in a different way. Each weapon had its purpose, and there weren't many weapons. The pistol was good in any situation, and it was the best at mid-range. There was no dual-wielding to mess it up. The plasma weapons had the stun effect. The physics were less realistic, but they were more fun. Explosions caused things to move, and the throwing distance on grenades was huge. You could use them to move the Rocket Launcher across the map. The game was much simpler on the surface, but it had much more depth.

The sequels broke the balance by adding dual wielding. They removed some depth when they removed the hybrid health system and fall damage. They made the game less enjoyable with the inferior maps. They removed clarity (especially Halo 2), by making the textures way too busy. Compare Wizard and Warlock. The vehicles were something to control and even horde, but now that they take damage, they have to despawn/respawn. While vehicles that don't take damage appear more powerful, the physics made them much easier to flip.

Yes, a very freaking boring SP of which i get no satisfaction playing it again.

Halo 1 SP, on the other hand was amazing. Everything just clicked. The music, the mood, the level design. You new the rules and boundaries in Halo, and with that you became apart of the story.

Playing campaign on legendary

  • 07.06.2008 5:09 PM PDT

I agree with everyone else. However, I believe the unifying aspect of Halo is the sense of wonder and immersive nature of the game. By presenting the plater with relatively unknown character, it necessitates imagination where the player places themselves in the Master Chief's shoes. I know the whenever I play, I actually feel as though I am the Master Chief, because I do not know what he looks like, which reinforces the immersive nature. The fact that Halo does not inundate one with some epic protagonist tome nor assault one with examples of how the protagonist should act, adds a greater depth of mystery to the game in which the player must use their imagination to fill in the missing pieces, thus drawing them in even more.
