Unless you like ultra-competitive gameplay, Halo 3 definitely beats Halo 1. Halo 1's multiplayer was just flawed, from the spawn system to the useless Needler.
But Halo 1 was so much fun as well; most of the weapons were useful in their own little way. The Plasma rifle could stun, the pistol could actually kill etc. Not so much about the maps though; they were good, but flawed. Like Sidewinder (it didn't have much vehicular combat for a vehicle map, if I remember).
In my opinion, Halo 2 had the best maps. Halo 3 is the one to play right now, but Halo 1 is always that little piece of nostalgia.
