ima big fan of the assault rifle and plasma rifle, so i got nothing to do bout them.
Maybe it's time to become a big fan of the pistol. The assault rifle and plasma rifle may look cooler, but if you're going to get even moderately good at this game, you need to learn how to use the pistol.
Pistol tips 101:
Aim for the head. Always, always shoot for the head. It's harder at first, but if you force yourself to do it you'll get better. If you don't aim for the head you'll end up with more assists and fewer kills. Aiming for the head also goes for opponents in vehicles (Warthog drivers, ghost drivers, warthog gunners, etc.).
Listen for the hit beep. If you aren't hearing the little beep, your shots aren't hitting anything. Experiment with leading distances until you start hearing the little beep. You'll get the hang of it if you keep at it.
Dodge back and forth randomly with the strafe buttons while firing. Standing still will get you killed. Running in a straight line will get you killed. Don't run straight at your opponent.
Don't hold the fire button. The pistol is MUCH more accurate if you pull the trigger for each bullet instead of holding it down.
Duck for cover or throw a grenade while reloading, or at least dodge back and forth like mad. Or all of the above.
Use the zoom unless you're really close. This will help your accuracy. If you're getting shot, though, don't waste time zooming in and out every time you get hit.
People that are shooting you are your top priority. Take them down first, then worry about the other people.
If you get the drop on someone, throw a grenade in their path to soften them up. As soon as the explosion hits them, shoot them once or twice to finish them off. If they're backing away from you, place the nade behind them. They'll either have to turn around to see it and evade (at which time you'll shoot them in the head), or they'll back over it (at which time you'll finish them off with the pistol).
Practice using the pistol. You won't get better with the pistol by flying around in a Banshee or sitting in a tank. Take every opportunity you can to improve your game. Watch the good players to see what they do, and try to incorporate some of that into your own style of play.
Finally, AIM FOR THE HEAD!!!! Did I mention that part? :)
If you can get proficient with the pistol and sniper rifle and learn tactics for controlling key areas of the maps, you can be unstoppable.
Oh, and you'll also need a good mousepad. I totally recommend using one of these. It's a very slick surface specifically for gaming. The reduced friction between the mouse and the surface makes it so much easier to adjust your aim. For ten bucks, you can't go wrong with it. I have one and wouldn't play Halo without it. :)
