Hello there!
I never, if ever, picked up the plasma rifle. I assumed it was worthless. I mean, it didn't even have the "instant shield drop" capability of the plasma pistol. Who would use it?
At least now, I would. Once you know how to use it, the plasma rifle is deadly against a single oponent. Moreso on the "suprise attack" than on the defense, but deadly on both.
Let's list all of the encounters the plasma rifle would be benificial:
* When sneaking up on somebody who is running away from your position with their back towards you.
Especially in narrow hallways, shoot them in the back and they will be semi-paralyzed. If your good, you can get close enough to them to hit them in the back before they even realize where you were.
* When weapons like the shotgun and the AR are attacking you.
The Shotgun and the AR do more damage the closer you are to your opponent. If you have someone charging you with one of those, it is best to get away as fast as possible and shoot them down from farther off. The plasma rifle does both.
Pull out your plasma rifle and aim it at their noggin. It'd rip out their shields faster than you would believe. Since they are semi-paralyzed by the plasma, they can not get close enough to use their Shotgun or AR effectively.
What about single player?
Both of the instances I have just mentioned are for multiplayer. But what about the campaign?
* Use the Plasma Rifle to take out a pack of grunts from long distances.
Unlike the Plasma Pistol, you can fire a continuous stream without much work. This is incredibly useful againts grunts at longer distances, especially on the Truth and Reconciliation, where the hallways are tight and the grunts can't move around much. The AR does work better against grunts in close quarters, but when you don't have a pistol, the PR is more effective at a distance.
* Use the Plasma Rifle against the Elites with Swords
Especially the invisible ones. It will paralyze them, so they cannot charge you, but quickly and efficiently kill them at the same time. Against the overshielded elites, nothing is useful except a Plasma Pistol, however. :(
There you have it. The Plasma Rifle is a very useful weapon, once you know how to use it. So much, in fact, that if enough people actually used it, it could become known as the "Back-Stabber".
