I know that grunts also speak english, but I think this is a clue to the forerunners. I believe the forerunners are the human decendants. The FR designed 343 GS, and he speaks english, so I think that the FR also spoke english. Thoughts.

Good Theory.

I don't know, anything is possible. We won't know for sure until another book is released or Halo 2 comes out.

Yeah, that's what he meant. And yes, it says that the grunts have translators, they do not speak english.

actually the theory doesn't really make sense, english isn't a very old launguage if the fore runners were human ancestors they would have probably spoken egyptian or greek or chinese or caveman or some older langauge

just a clarification. Grunts don't have translators, we have translators for their language. It's not like grunts run around wanting MC to know what they are saying.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

The Spartans have translators built into their armor. It translates most of the Covenant languages (Grunts, and in the books, Elites). Perhaps the translator automatically translates the 343's speach as well, simply because it may be similar to Covenant dialects. I think this because Covenant like to copy things... perhaps they copied Forerunner dialect as well, since they view them pretty much as gods...

But, 343 DOES have a British accent... but English was not the first language developed by the human race, so I don't think it really means anything. The accent may be there just because of the question, "what insane little AI is complete with out a British accent?"

Also, I'm not sure if the Covenant use translators amongst themselves or not. All the races probably have their native languages... but they might have a "universal" language that they use to communicate with eachother so that they wouldn't have to use translators. Personally, I think that the Prophets and Elites (they're presumeably 1st and 2nd best in the Covie hierarchy) use a modified Forerunner dialect, which would then be made as the "universal" dialect for the other classes (modified because copies are never as good as the original). And the lower classes use it more simplisticly, so thats might be why almost everything is understandable with Grunts... And also, since the copied language wouldn't be exactly like the true forerunner dialect, perhaps that explains why the translator can translate 343's speach so well....

Just my thoughts.

Sorry, that's what I meant...just got a little confused with the wording. We have translators for their language. And as shown in First Strike, we now have reasonable translator software for the Elite's language as well.

Shai Hulud: I don't think that Elites are second in the hierarchy. At the end of First Strike, it shows a seen on the Covie homeworld. In this scene, there are 300 Elites guarding a Prophet, and then he has them leave so he can talk with a general, a Brute. I think that Brutes are above Elites. Pure speculation of course.

Yeah, it's taken from Frankie's write-up on high-definition televisions and surround sound setups.

I'm curious as to why they are so concered about EDTV NOT being the way to go.. Do they really care if I'm not playing Halo in 480p? Did I really accidentally buy an EDTV? Do I really need to watch pornos in 720p when I'm not playing Halo in 480p?

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Who, or what, are the Helghast?

For those who want to see what a forerunner looks like, I've got a concept in the works (it didn't start out as a Forerunner concept, though... I had made a tee-shirt with a face of an alien concept I had... it would work as a Forerunner.) The body isn't done, and it'll be a while before I send it in, since my scanner isn't working. Just to let ya know.

Other things I plan on doing:
1.) Drawing of the High Prophet of Truth and Tartarus meeting.
2.) "Victory" shot of the Master Chief with a semi-broken visor, holding a flag that is imapailed on an Elite's body.
3.) Drawing of the scene where Fred, Joshua, and Kelly are racing to a Covenant cruiser in their banshees, with Kelly riding on top of hers, preparing to throw a "nuclear grenande" into the grav lift.

I may or may not do some of them. It will take a long time, though... I'm not a fast drawer.

I havnet read FS yet but I don't think Brutes are above elites. They seem dumb and basically just tanks. Elites use their intelligence. I mean, just look and the names. Which sounds higher up: Elite or Brute?

While I believe humans are decendents of FR English should have nothing to do with this. There are too many languages on earth right now and as others have said English isn't that old.

Good point, that's exactly how I viewed it. But before I read First Strike. I really think you need to read it, because it changed my opinion on the matter. The Brutes are 10x stronger than the Elites. Also, as I said before, the Brute Tartarus had a meeting with the High Prophet of Truth and the book said it surprised the 300 Elite guards, that they were asked to leave the two alone, that it didn't happen often. This conversation that takes place, leads me to believe that the Brutes share a close relationship with the Prophets, who sit atop the hierarchy. This is why the Brute are above the Elites. Also on the topic of the names, Elite and Brute are just the closest translations from their language to ours that we have available...it's very rough. That's also in First Strike. So I would say read the book, and then decide.

The reason we can understand the different languages at all (Covenant or otherwise) is because humans have translators for language (makes sense. I could use one of those in Spanish class). About 343 GS though, if he's an A.I., then I wouldn't put it past him to learn our language in, you know, a matter of seconds. "Leave the thinking to those of us with planet-sized brains." -Tycho

Possible. But I kind of think that he could be like C3PO, where he knows a huge number of languages already. Also, I seem to remeber something about the Forerunner controls on Halo resembling stuff in the English languange...being extremley easy for Cortana to navigate. Can anyone confirm that? I don't remember exactly where that came from, possibly I just made it up, heh.

Then why does GS have a brittish accent. No one on Halo had a Brittish accent for GS to imitate.
