I'm quite sure that most of you are up-to-date with the Weekly update, considering it's right here in the forums.
However, closing off the speculation spectrum, for the moment, I ask for your attention on this specific part of the update, that I found most interesting:
"Although I've grown quite fond of the placeholder trees in one of the environments, I spied a "real" tree on an environment artist's monitor just a day or so ago. It was the best tree I've seen outside of RalliSport 2, so let's hope it finds its way into the game somehow. After all, the Ewoks we're introducing into the game have got to live somewhere…"
The first thing that came to mind was the possibility of another sentient species. Using the term 'Ewoks surely provides some kind of clue as to their intellectual level. For if they were merely animals, I'm sure they would have had no problem in applying the term ''primate". As I recall, Ewoks weren't mindless animals acting on instinct alone.
Now the closest thing I could relate this thought to is a fond recollection of a Science fiction Novel, written by the acclaimed writer Orson Scott Card, that goes by the name 'Xenocide'. I believe a few of you know What I am referring to...
In any case, the books synopsis is a basic dilemma between humans and a case of Xenophobia toward a recently discovered sentient race, coexisting on the same colony (planet), and how the human race decides to act. Toward the primitive race's understanding, and evaluation, or it's dismissal and destruction. The sentient species in this case is the 'Piggies'. Christened for their resemblance to the mammals known as pigs on earth, only upright erect, and larger, oh and the presence of the common understanding of language.
The 'Piggies' are a race that dwell among the vast forests of their world. Such as is proposed in the above quote...
All in all, treaties are signed between the two races, and covenants are set. The piggies learn extremely fast, and become another one of humanities allies. But not before the narrow avoidance of Xenocide on the humans part.~
-- I wonder if these Ewoks will be part of the Covenant...? or maybe we'll get to them first? ;)

Oh, and I'd like to add to those that have seen the new Campaign screen of Halo 2.:
... just check out those freakin' jackals! New look...yes, but same shamefully crooked smile. Man they're ugly bastards...
