im not sure this is was normal mapping was, but i heard that its where in development the creators make the models out of thousands of polygons and have computers take down the way the light reflects and different things like that... then in the game they use a lower polygon character, like 1500 but apply the same effects that they got from the higher polygon character..so it almost looks the same.
