Yea, been talked about; not sure if that's somehow a clue to Halo 2 in someway...

Can't wait until all of these questions will be answered: it will be a glorious day

I'm going to say this again, but if I have to do it once more, I swear I'm going to explode.

The Marathon storyline is in no way connected to the Halo storyline. Marathon took place in the 26th Century. Halo also takes place in the 26th Century. There is no chance of the two being reconciled; in fact Bungie have specifically stated on several occasions that the stories are in no way linked.

The fact that the Marathon logo is scattered around Halo is simply a tribute to Grandpa Marathon. Don't read too much into it. Don't worry. I made the same mistake myself once, and even had an elaborate theory that linked the stories together. :)

Well have to wait until Halo 2 to see if Bungie was telling the truth when they said the stories aren't connected. ;) I wouldn't be surprised if important characters from Marathon were... *gasp!* the ancesters of the forerunners!! :o

yes they are connected? I think you got those numbers wrong... Halo is set in the Marathon/PiD universe...

Marathon 1 (and the Lost Network Packets storylines) and Pathways Into Darkness, and also part of Marathon 2 happen before the year 2472, so before Halo... then the most of Marathon 2 (and parts of M1) take place after the Halo section of the timeline in 2611+.

So the reason why the marathon logo is on the captain and the pillar of autumn, etc. makes perfect sense (the Marathon, the actual ship, would have been a huge part of human history and the militarty?)...

dunno about guilty spark though, that dosent seem to fit in that easily in the storyline, so THAT could be a tribute to Marathon...

Actually, the Marathon only reaches Tau Ceti in 2773, and the Pfhor attack in 2794, which is a few hundred years after Halo. Yes, it is interesting that Halo takes place in the "Century intentionally left blank" in the Marathon timeline, but the contact with the Pfhor is the first alien contact humanity has encountered.

Other problems with trying to connect the stories include the fact that in Marathon, the Jjaro are the god-like race which is long-gone, while in Halo it is the Forerunner, that the human empire in Marathon was in its very early stages in the 2400s in Marathon, while in Halo, less than a hundred years later, it has spread to hundreds of worlds; and at this time colonisation was a very slow process - it takes the Marathon about 150 years to reach Tau Ceti to establish the colony.

There is the other possibility, that Durandal managed to escape the close of the Universe and continue on into the next universe, where he gave evolution a nudge here and there to recreate humanity, and therefore Durandal himself (and Mr Security Officer? That would explain 343's recognition of the Master Chief, since he is so similar to the Security Officer in Marathon) would be the Forerunner, but that is so unlikely that it's not really worth considering, especially since Bungie has said specifically that the stories are not linked.
