A motherboard gives you slots for RAM, processors (so if you want to keep your processer then you'll need to get that with the motherboard)and graphics cards. There's also lots of other things that i just cant be bothered to mention. Installing a motherboard does involve opening a computer up and i would advise you to get a pro in to do that because if you let the motherboard touch the side of ur PC it shortcircuits and you'll need a new one.

Finally, installing a new motherboard does not rid you of your precious music and obviously halo will stay. the music is stored on the hard disk.

Heyyo,

Yep. Don't forget the IDE cables, and possible s-ATA, and even some, raid. ;)

Now, there's also the little pints to setup, like for the power button and LED (if it doesn't light up, but the comp turns on, you have it backwards).

There's also the little pins for usb slots, oh those are a pain.

Yeah, after installing a new motherboard, the easiet way to get your comp back in working condition is reinstall your operating system onnit. If you reformat first you risk losing your data as recovery after a format is hella hard.

I think there's one thing you need to understand which hasn't been explained very well.
Your motherboard is the heart of your PC. All the hardware for a PC, including that CD burner and the hard-drive which contains all your data, connects to it.
When people up-grade hardware for their PC, for example a new graphic card, they will need to make sure it's compatible with their mobo. Fairly easy. I'm in the position now though that I have a lot of modern hardware for my PC except my mobo. I need a new one as well but the thing is to be able to continue using my modern graphic card etc I will need to find a compatible mobo. This is where the problems can start. Finding a mobo that takes all that modern hardware. In fact I know for starters that if I want a modern mobo I will not be able to use my old sticks of RAM. So I will need to buy some new RAM as well as the mobo.
What I'm trying to say is that you may find that if you get a new mobo you may well need to replace some of stuff that plugs into it.
Off the top of my head here's some of the stuff that plugs into my mobo.
Processor. Graphic card. Sound card. RAM memory. Hard-drive. Network card. Firewire card. USB card. Modem.
When I got my PC I had a 1.6ghz Pentium4. The mobo allowed me to upgrade it to 2ghz. The Pentium4 has basically become the bottleneck in my PC. I want a 3ghz upgrade but the mobo won't allow it. So along with the mobo and RAM I will also need a new processor.
It's my experience that a PC very rarely needs "just a mobo upgrade".

Get an AMD board and an AMD processor, like socket 939. AMD's are faster than Intels for gaming, and in addition, are much cheaper. Oh, that whole diddy about speed matters? My 2.2GHz AMD beats a 3.4GHz Intel, and it cost about $400 less :o

Yes, the motherboard is the heart of everything. If you have a bad motherboard, your system will suffer no matter what the other parts are.

ok, man it looks like u need to know the basics of a pc.
heres the main parts and what they do(correct me if im rong):

processor-turns data into information and things are prossed here. the faster the cpu(centeral proccesing unit)the faster the programs will run (with the execption of a few. eg. amd 64)

RAM- random acess memory- stores most sdata that u are currently using, and generally, the more u have, the more sustainable ur pc will be (again it can be also measured in mhz like the cpu) 512mb ddr 400 is suffiecent

Hard drive- a large storage are that all your main things get stored on: your games, music, and all other files(generally ur local disk; c)

graphics card- generates graphics and has its own internal cpu (sometimes two) and ram. nowdays u HAVE to have at least direct x 8 but 9 cannot b stressed more by me.

motherboard- everything conects to the motherboard the, cd drive, hard drive, graphics card.ect, now there are different types of connectoins wether it b by slot or cable and they all have different transfer speeds. for example- Pci is a small slot where a card can be placed into and the data will transfer through it depending on the transfer rate. pci is 1x, AGP is either 2x. 4x, or 8x depending upon the mobo. and pci express is said to b 16x, as it is practiclly 2 Agps together alllowing data to b transfered down two lanes.

now thats the real BASICS but u shoud no that wen buying a pc, and should avoid u getting ripped off.
also u mite wana cionsider the chipset
thats basicly how the mobo runs, most mobos hav a northbridge and a southbridge where the do different things and send data to different places. eg the northbridge may send it tio ur vdu or to ur usb. but some have it all in one, like the nvidias nforce 3. that means data is slightly faster and somethimes has more on the chip.

hope that helps m8, and sorry if somes rond im a lil rusty
