With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.
The Forerunners created Halo to study and contain the Flood, as we all know. But where did they find the Flood? Did they create them? Merely find them on some planet? Or were they attacked by them?
Its hard to believe that they simply found them (for me, anyhow). If they occupied their own planet (with or without another species to feed on), it seems, to me, that they would've died out very quickly. They expand at an alarming rate, and unless they found something that can take them into space, they would've consumed all that they can very quickly... To me, that means they would've starved to death soon after (having no more food to get). It seems odd that a creature would deliberately go out and eat everything, knowing the food souce (organisms w/ sufficient biomass) isn't exactly renewable, thus dooming itself. Perhaps the Forerunners found the Flood at the right (well, wrong) time... before they died out. Or perhaps the Flood consumed native organisms with sufficient biomass at a late enough time to have access to developed spacecraft. That would allow them to journey forth to more planets and consume more things....
Or, maybe the Flood are actually smart enough on their own (through a host's mind) to develope space travel technology (even if the host originally hadn't developed it).
I kinda think the Forerunners created them (not neccessarily as a biological weapon... due to how the Flood work, but perhaps a biological self-preservation tool, which I'll map out for you later). I only think this based on what we know and don't know about the Flood. There may not be any hard facts to actually proove it, but its only a theory. We'll never really know until Bungie tells us, but we can hypothesize and theorize.
Just what I think. I am NOT saying I'm right. I am NOT asking you to agree with me. I am NOT trying to offend anyone.
