This is really where Halo trumped all other games: believable enemies. Gears of War doesn't even have non-combat animations for its enemies.
Seeing enemies react to their comrades dying, panicking, adjusting, etc. was totally new for me.
The Grunt humor really made Halo unique.
On the other hand, have to agree with womyfts "challenge" aspect; seeing a Zealot charging with a sword was scary and awesome.
