I can just now see myself cutting up grunts with the sword but think about it.... u ever try running into a black spec op elites with a shotgun and nothing els.... yeah if you can get close they're dead but if they see you from afar good luck getting close...... I think its gonna be one of thos weapons that you dont use on legendary but you put it on normal just to have fun......

I agree totally, getting close on legendary without being nailed is hard work. I cant wait to use the sword but its gonna be hard to use on legendary.

And i'm not being negative, i'm being realistic.

Every sniper in the game will be watching the plasma sword. Getting it will be difficult.

Gameplay tactics will change. Not just the sword, but a lot of the other weapons are getting an overhaul, so everything won't be the same. You can talk, but can you put your mouth where your thumbs are?
The sword will be good in certain situations (eg guarding the flag etc.), i'm also guessing you can jump on vehicles and kill the driver in the seat, and maybe destroy the vehicle (happened to me in halo, elite with sword jumped on my banshee and destroyed it with one swipe)

  • 06.23.2004 8:15 AM PDT

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

God, I remember that gun. The Silver one was good too. But the one-shot kill was a -blam!-, the only difference here is that you need to get close with the Energy Sword to use it. The Golden Gu, well... it was still a gun.

lol heh....o well
The sword could also be used as like a "finisher" if you know what i mean...don't want to waste ammo or have none. Besides some people might only have a gametype with swords or something. It adds a new tactic to the gameplay.
lol you never know....there might be some people out there who just want to go hand to hand combat..

The Energy Sword will be the most defensive weapon in the game and drive Flag obtainers insane. In confined spaces many used to use the Shotgun, many now will use the Energy Sword ensuring you don't go far.
One very poor argument is that you will get shot before you can melee anyone. Theres a very simple solution to this, use your second weapon then switch when your close for a good slicing and dicing session. Many snipers won't know you have it until its too late. As for specifically marking the energy sword spot first of all thats lame but secondly no matter how hard you try someone will eventually get one.
The energy sword offers a lot of potential to the game in multiplayer.
As for the main game, it will rule normal, easy and maybe Heroic but like many have said, the uber powerful elites will decimate you before you get close. having said that i will still use it and it will come in handy for sneaky kills and stealth tactics so at times will still be a good weapon of choice

I agree.....combined with the power of duel SMGs you still might have some chance on Legendary
Also maps will be remade to suit the weapon. (Eg. might change the way the bases are on Blood Gulch, allow smoother control with the Plasma Sword)
By the way...we also know, whatever the Covenant have....we have something to match it, sorta.
Pistol=Plasma Pistol
Assault Rifle=Plasma Rifle
Fuel Rod=Rocket Launcher
Plasma Grenades=Frag Grenades
Shotgun=?
Plasma Sword=? (maybe a human sword?)
Now that i come to think of it......was there a Covenant match to the Shotgun?....any ideas people?

yes there is often a mirror image as such for each races weapon but i think that its very important for each race to have their own unique weapons to give them some uniqueness. don't you think? it would be lame to have each races version of EVERY weapon

i'd hazard a guess that the brute gun is a shotgun-esque style weapon. That would seem to suit brutes, a big powerful close range gun.

The brutes in the e3 2003 demo used a gun called the slug thrower and it looked to me like it was much better suited to mid-far range rather than close up (which is what the blade on it is for)

Yes....we see the different effects
We all know that Human weapons use projectiles and Covenant weapons use plasma
(Eg Frag grenades bounce and have an explosion that goes up, while plasma grenades stick and seem to have more of a spherical explosion. We also know that plasma grenades disrupt electrical systems)
But there still has to be something close to the firing POWER of the shotgun.

I still think the sword is cool in melee only multiplayer games. But my weapons will be pistol (if its in halo 2, I dont why it wouldet, after all, its the best gun in halo 1) and sniper rifle.

i response to an earlier post. whats the point of a close range covenant gun when theres the covenant energy sword which is their version of a close range weapon? another one would be pointless

I like the Sword. Although, if people over use it or spwn camp with it, it'll uber-suck. I want a battle, not trying to get one dumba55 who stays in a corner killing everyone who comes by him. Also, for the people who have been saying you should be able to throw the sword, this is for you. The sword is already a one/two hit kill weapon. Now it gonna be able to be thrown? That is so unbalanced its not ever funny!

Think about it..Zamamee...a Covenant shotgun...you would be able to rely on it more than a Covenant sword. Besides, it would be easier to get than a sword.

I dont think the energy sword is an equivalent of the shotgun, they're similar in the sense that they're very effective close range but shotgun is still pretty good at mid-range and obviously the energy sword is melee. Besides brutes like getting in there, a close range gun with a melee weapon on it would provide the shotgun equivalent and suit the brutes reputation. Besides, a brute wouldnt use an energy sword would it? or a long range weapon?

But then this is all speculation....

If we are going to be very specific Brutes would rather use no weapon go right up to you and choke you with their bare hands. Their gun is to compensate for this (i think) because when they're up close your going to be very screwed and they won't care about their gun. think hunters, they prefer hitting you and use the fuel rod gun to make up for lack of far range effectiveness

Yes it is
We don't know EXACTLY what the Brute are like. Look at the information we have gathered on them
1. We know that they guard the Prophets
2. We know that they are really tough, probably better or equivalent to Hunters
3. At e3 we've seen them use something close to that of the Hunters

It's really hard to speculate anything at this point
Number 1 suggests that they would most likely use a close range weapon while number 3 says that we've seem them use a longer range weapon

If you think about, you could almost say that the plasma sword was a match for the shotgun. It's a stretch but think about it. Shotgun best at close range. PS good at close range. Bith ineffective at long range. What do you think?
