I wrote an article in the Tactica: Weapons database of my chapter (feel free to join) about the needler. For convenience (mine, not yours) I'll post it here:
"Many people think the needler is useless in Halo. I beg to differ. I think it might still be the worst weapon in the game, but it does have uses in both single and multiplayer.
Campaign: Elites can be a pain to take out. Especially in higher difficulties. In Heroic and Legendary I normally use plasma grenades, but at these levels the Elites have good nade dodging skills. This is where the needler comes in. If I have a particularly hard time with an Elite I will sometimes pick up a needler. If I pump about half a clip into him he will die. This works best in open areas where an Elite can easily dodge plasma grenades but can't duck behind cover to escape the wrath of the explosive pink needles heading his way.
Multiplayer: Probably less use here, but still some power. Half a clip will kill a Spartan, and give off a powerful explosion. Sometimes its fun to pump a full clip into an opponent. This is a bit of an overkill, but the resulting three explosions might do some damage to other players. At the least it will look cool. Not to mention the humility that comes to people who underestimate the needler and get owned by it.
So there you have. The needler isn't the most powerful weapon in Halo, but it has the potential to be very deadly if used by someone who knows what they're doing. I know Shane recognizes its power."
And raleigh, you're wrong. Its actually the opposite: the noobs (I thought we couldn't use that word?) don't like it cause they don't have enough skill to use it properly. The more experienced players realize its potential and can get it to work for them.
