Thank you for posting the detailed mechanics of the BR. I have been wanting to get my hands on those details for a while now. The amount of BR bashing threads should significantly decrease now that a quality explanation has been given. If only everyone had a T3 internet connection, then some of these networking issues wouldn't be such problems.
IMO, the BR is still inconsistent and frustrating to use. Knowing why doesn't stop it from being inconsistent and frustrating to use. In fact, knowing it's random by design makes it worse because now I can blame nothing but the game when I get unfairly out-BR'd.

Oh come on...Why is it that Bungie can no longer come up with anything original anymore? I can't believe that they're still remaking maps. I figured that after the new sidewinder map that they would be done with the remakes, but now they've done it again! Don't get me wrong, I love the remakes they've come out with, but why keep making them? Chill out wasn't even that great of a map. It looks good so far, but seriously bungie, don't be sellouts like hollywood. Stop making remakes and sequels and come up with something original for once because right now it seems like you guys are losing your touch.

Dude, use your head. The physics make more sense that way. In Halo 2 if you were hit by the first bullet, you were automatically hit by all three. It doesn't make sense for bullets to chase each other around corners, that's why they made it that way for Halo 3, and the fact that you have to aim ahead of your targets also makes more sense and it means that you need to apply more skill to using the weapon. Trust me, the BR really isn't that hard to use. If you're having trouble, you obviously need to practice more, and this is coming from someone who barely plays the game anymore, so you should probably step up your game.

Please, stop complaining about a weapon. People keep dying by my BR, that's all that matters. I can't believe how it can be frustrating to use, maybe frustrating to die by it for the 100th time.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

What's funny is that isn't the worst post I've ever seen from DanBauer. Which is pretty pathetic at the same time. My personal favorite was when he was critical of the H3 BR and AR before he had even played the game. His sole reason for saying they didn't work? MLG said so! He even made a whole thread about how the AR/BRs were broken because people at MLG said it was. Way to think for yourself.

Oh, and Hitzel. Give it up. You've been hanging onto that quote for years and you still don't get it. He don't work for Bungie anymore. His impressions of the M6D are pointless to this conversation. Several CURRENT Bungie employees have said countless times that the M6D was a broken, unbalanced weapon. They said the same for the H2 BR (even though it was slightly better than the M6D) If you haven't notice Bungie has gone to the development point where all weapons have a role instead of 1 weapon filling all roles. This changes gameplay drastically because the player is required to makes choices about what weapons they want to carry in order to accomplish their goal. In HCE all I needed was the M6D because it was the one weapon to rule them all. If someone had a shotty/rockets was my only concern. And if I thought they did all I had to do was stay slightly outside of their kill range while taking them out with my howitzer hand-cannon.

More on topic of the WWUD is that I love the H3 BR. I feel that it's still awfully powerful but at the same time isn't ludicrously powerful like M6D or H2 BR were. I've always understood that the spread was to limit the range of the BR in order for it to fill the role as a sniper distraction at long-range while being dominant in medium range. It now definitely has more of a defined role compared to the H2 iteration.

Oh, and I thought that Bungie said that they were against using teleporters. Something about moving a distance without any "cost". Which is why they talked about instituting the man-cannons. Well, since Bungie obviously doesn't mind using a couple of teleporters...can we get Boarding Action? Hell, even with man-cannons shooting players back and forth would be awesome even if you didn't want to go the teleporter route.

I hold onto it because it's true, and because some people ride the Bungie bandwagon too much to listen to anything besides Bungie. Glad you noticed =)

I figured John didn't work for Bungie anymore when he was the lead dev for FASA, but thanks for confirming that for me.

I'll say this straight up, if you claim all you used in H1 was the Pistol you are either 1) lieing, or 2) playing horrible players, because the Pistol isn't what it's cracked up to be. Like I said already, the Pistol gets dominated by the other weapons when used for their specific jobs. The only exception to that is the Needler, and that's the game's humiliation kill weapon.

To keep it simple, vs Pistol:

*Shotty and AR are better at close range.
*PP and PR are better for flanking / teamshooting and vs OS.
*Sniper is better at long range.
*Rocket is the game's power weapon.
*Pistol isn't useful against OS.
*No quick-camo with Pistol, so you drop your Pistol and keep AR for camo+snipe or camo+rockets.
*Pistol is always best at mid-range
*Needler is... lol.

And for the heck of it:
*Grenades are anti-camp, Pistol isn't.
*Pistol has slow melee, AR is better for double melees.

So going back to my original point, the Pistol was useful all-around, but everything beats the Pistol at it's intended job. Because of that, you need to pick your weapons intelligently and know when and how to use them.

Another thing to note is that EVERYTHING except for the needler is more powerful in Halo 1 than it is in 2 and 3 (except the PP in Halo 2). Yes, the Pistol was a 3sk , but don't forget that everything else was lethal back then too. Also don't forget that a 3sk was actually uncommon because of it's difficulty to execute. Watch pro gameplays. 3sk's were a rarity and always exciting to see because they didn't happen often.

I understand the logic behind wanting to make the BR a short to mid range focused weapon instead, but there is no decent replacement that is mid-long range, the placement of the BRs on the maps seems to treat the weapon as if it were as good at that range as in Halo 2, so it's no wonder people are trying to use it in the same way, couldn't you have adjusted the Carbine to be more of a mid-long range weapon? Then the BRs and Carbines would be both placed on the maps equally, providing equal battles at mid range, but with the BR getting the advantage close up and the Carbine getting the advantage further away. People would have a reason for choosing individually between them beyond personal preference and yet neither would end up being overpowered.

Exactly, just because it is explained doesn't mean that it's not a bs system. Next thing we know people can walk faster than bullets. I mean we're talking about a player moving towards aimed point 25 cm. Bullet fired towards aimed point unknown distance. Do you believe that at 0-20 m (if not more) that a bullet can be outrun by a (slow moving) spartan..? That doesnt even happen in this time with the current weapons. Come on bungie, next time you make a game think this -blam!- through.

The weapons are just not fun in halo 3 anymore. Remember the ar from halo ce, I admit it doesn't have the range of that of a real life ar, but it was fun too play with and since there was no smg. It was a nice in between thing.
IN halo 2 the ar was more specified in to two different weapons. 1 the smg a close range weapon perhaps even to inaccurate ( a pray and spray weapon). 2 the br, and it was weapon how the normal ar real time is working (almost).
In halo 3 the ar returned being a 2-handed smg, And now this happened to the br. Meaning we still don't have a real Assault rifle.

I always felt the BR to be a replacement for the Pistol, the Pistol was the all range weapon in Halo 1 and the BR was the all range weapon in Halo 2, Bungie felt any type of all range weapon would be overpowered, but these weapons have always been strongly tied to competitive play.

Although perhaps the fact the BR was used practically 95% of the time in all Halo 2 MLG matches is an indication that it was in fact overpowered, regardless I don't think what Bungie has done to try and fix the problem is perfect, but Bungie are stuck in a corner, everyone wanted the BR they know and love and Bungie knew they had to give it to them, even though they didn't really like what the BR had become, what they've done is try to remedy the issue without making risky or drastic changes, perhaps it would have been better in the end if Bungie had made those changes, but that we cannot know for sure, I think it's best to give Bungie the benefit of the doubt on this one, lest we forget, peoples expectations before the game's release were huge, a lot was at stake, the community playing halo is still huge, a lot is still at stake.

Q: Are the cool looking teleporters on Cold Storage placeable in forge?

They kinda look like they're part of the map, but no map has had permanent teleporters in Halo 3 yet. Only Avalanche had ones placed by default, and they were the stock ones. I really hope they're moveable / removable / placeable in forge, otherwise you're going to really limit the potential of this map.
