my friend got his account hacked and he got it back, but I still know that another guy is out there and I know his GT. what do I do? also I have video proof: <link removed>
Well this forum and this thread are not really appropriate places to "call out" people you suspect of account-stealing. If your own account is stolen, you should call XBox Live Support (1-800-4MY-XBOX) and have as much information about the account available as possible -- billing address, credit card information, etc.

People who "admit" to "hacking" or stealing accounts should be blocked and reported via the XBL reporting system.

Here's some more helpful information from another user who sent me a PM:

an internet detective is someone who uses a search engine and your username to try and obtain information. do a quick google search and if you find any of your personal information for all to see, sign into which ever website/s are displaying it and edit your profile to hidden or make your information vague [such as you said, general area's not actual specifics. an example is how i state my general region in England instead of disclosing my actual location]

My old Account was hacked (Assassin xMoDx) and the hacker spent $250 dollars on my credit card using my hotmail account (Aka my Xbox Live GT). He re-hacked my account again for another $64 dollars. One of the charges was something I brought on a different XBL account using MS points. I cannot re-fund the purchase because the hacker linked the IP address showing that the points and merchandise were brought at my house on my system, even though clrealy I didn't do it. Microsoft said that is where it was brought, so no evidence lead to the hackers whereabouts or original Gamertag. How is this possible? What happened? Any clues or extra tips on this for it to never to happen again would be great. Thank you.

Well I'm not sure what happened or how, since there's not much information that could show it, but I think that the information in the first post will definitely help you take some positive steps towards ensuring that it never happens again.

Great thread,,, I would like to add this, it's amazing how many times I sit in a lobby and hear players discussing their age location and what the do for a living as well as their pets and the names of them, don't do this sort of thing, you have no idea who is listening, and what they are taking note of, this doesn't just happen in Halo but all games,

Also on the topic of pets, if your dog barks and a player says " I suppose your dog has a dumb name like Rover " don't be fooled by that and give out your pets real name, it's amazing how many people use their pets name as a security question or password.

Just my two cents worth.

Why did you "Un-Pin" this Thread?
I pinned it accidentally -- this is not the type of thread that we normally pin, as it is not really a consolidated discussion. I personally think that the information is quite helpful, but that doesn't necessarily warrant it being a sticky at the moment.

If we start to see an exceptionally large number of threads about this topic, we'll reconsider it as a sticky. For now, just be sure to hit the "Save Thread" button so that you don't lose it.

Thanks!

Something to remember when filling in your Halo 3 information:

Hackers are going to use any information they can find when trying to get your password. If you say you're from Oklahoma City, OK, that's more information for the hacker to give the XBL support when trying to steal a password. Here's a tip. Instead of stating your real name, location, age, etc. just make something up. Don't give support to someone trying to steal your account.

Not necessarily -- most of the popular web-based email systems are just as secure as Hotmail or Yahoo. Really, what the average XBL player has to worry about a lot more is phishing/social engineering. If you carefully take steps to prevent that, the likelihood of your account ever being stolen is quite low.

I have some antivirus, but occasionally I find it turns off for about a day, until I notice and turn it back on. But I have a question- I am going to DL that AVG Free, and that other site you linked, but can hackers put up a site that looks like it's a DL for the anti virus, but really isn't?

And also, what are cookies on your webpage?
And...... can you get a virus simply by visiting a site, not downloading anything, just going to the site?
