nice thread very useful

nice guide foman. luckily i have an added layer of protection-having nothing really worth stealing.

i've been hit by a couple of virus' before, so i have McAfee anti-virus. retty good, as it runs automatic virus scans, auto-updates and comes with a firewall. on top of that i use windows firewall. its pretty good. its free and always on, so it just gives that added layer of protection.

I have some antivirus, but occasionally I find it turns off for about a day, until I notice and turn it back on. But I have a question- I am going to DL that AVG Free, and that other site you linked, but can hackers put up a site that looks like it's a DL for the anti virus, but really isn't?

And also, what are cookies on your webpage?
And...... can you get a virus simply by visiting a site, not downloading anything, just going to the site?
Well, this thread is more about protecting your account from thieves, not protecting your computer from viruses. I have not done all the research on that at this point, so I wouldn't feel comfortable answering that here, since it is off-topic and I'm not sure of the answers. You could certainly try asking this question in the Flood Forum, though.

Yes, of course I understand what is going on. That is why I gave specific advice in the OP addressing every single issue you just raised. I'm not sure what you thought I didn't cover....

... because in Soviet Sparta, b**ches don't know all your additional Chocolate pedobear cheezburgers doing over 9000 barrel rolls while firing their charged lazers at the weak point for massive damage are belong to us on a motherf***in' plane, which is a serious trap!

Thanks for the very informative post :) It was very helpful. In fact, I have the sudden random urge to go change my password... Lol.

Good post.

Edit: Sorry to bump an old post... But it was very informative and I saw it through a link and didn't check the last post date.

ahh, my main concern was easily the pretexting. I had always thought that people would still be able to try that if they wanted to gain access to my account. Thanks for clarifying that.

The problem with Xbox live accounts being stolen doesn't reside with the email address attached, it resides with Xbox Live support doing little to no account verification before giving out info. At least in MY experience. Call once, get some info- Call a second time, give the info like you already knew it... and they will pretty much give you the account.

A little social engineering goes a long way when it comes to the silly overseas Xbox live "customer service".

he does know whats going on. most of this social manipulation is pivotal on having certain information all ready. internet detectives will use search sites to try and track down accounts you own and see if they can find any information that they need to recover your account. just beware.

Very good. I actually use most of the tips, since I'm pretty paranoid about hackers. I was REALLY hesitant to even put my brand new credit card info on my XBL account.

Yeah, it's not really the kind of thread that we normally sticky because it's not a consolidation thread or a rules post, but I did place a link to it in the Halo 3 Forum Rules and Threads of Interest sticky.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Awesome.

WHat about protecting your account ingame? I've been playing with some host booters lately and I know they can do it because they kick anybody they get ticked off at. But they also claim they can steal credit cards. I'm actually afraid to play halo3 because of this.

Anyway to keep your account from actually getting hacked? or host booting whatever.

EDIT: The hackers/booters whatever say stuff about using your IP address to hack you.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I recently used This password generator to find a new password. Worked great.

EDIT: if you're worried about the link, just think, I would have to be an idiot to post a prank web site on this thread.
