Well Enough Alone...

I am looking into the possibility of creating maps for halo in google sketch up because it is much faster, then exporting the geometry and importing it to 3ds max. I know it's possible to do it without the pro version of google sketch up. It involves exporting it (to google earth or google earth 4 I'm not sure), renaming it with a .zip extension, extracting it (I have the trial version of winrar), then importing the resulting .dae file to 3ds max (I have the trial version of the latest version. It sais that There is a later version of some plug in that I could get. Would that help?).
When I try extracting the google sketch up 4 version i exported, It creates a text document called textures (empty), a file named doc.kml, and a folder called models with the .dae file in it. When I try extracting the normal google earth exported file, all it does is create a doc.kml file, which I have no clue what is or what to do with. I tried importing the google earth 4 extracted .dae file with no luck.
Once it's imported I can texture it and make sure it is all closed up and such, then compile it as a map. I got to the importing part, but then max sais it had an error and needs to close. Is there any importing settings I should change? Anything else I can do? Thank you!

P.S. If anyone knows a really easy fast free (or free trial) 3D modeling program, please recomend it.

I don't know whats wrong with sketch up. I never liked it that mutch, but I can recommend Gmax as a good, free, fairly easy 3-d modeling program. Its basically just 3DS Max.

I already have Gmax, 3ds max, 4D cinima, and XSI mod tool. I still think sketch up is the easyest to use, but it is relativly limited in tools and features.

I was about to start a new topic asking if there was a way to create halo 2 maps without buying a 4,000 dollar program and I think you might have answered my question. Do you mind pointing me to a free program I can use to build a halo 2 map? one with a tutorial would also be amazing haha

Well, there's the 30 day trial of 3ds max, gmax, which as was stated above is basicly a cut down version of 3dsmax, google sketch up (hard to make it the right format, you probably need another modeling program to import it and export it out in the right format), XSI Mod tool (Its free, fully functional, and it's what Valve uses to make their games), and the trial of 4d Cinima, which from what i can tell might be slightly easyer then the rest, except sketch up.

Now can someone please tell me how to get sketch up models in 3ds max or one of the above 3d modeling programs?
