Subject: Of arguments and flame wars.

I would probably let a civilized argument slide, as long as it didn't turn into some mindless kiddy flame war.

I do think we need a flat out revision of the rules, stating what happens when you are warned and such.

Most arguments are fine, consider ing thats basically what made america what it is,
such as councils, political issues, and court cases.

Whether I consider something to be flame has nothing to do with individual words; I don't believe in "bad words", only bad uses. Whether a "forbidden" word or an "acceptable" substitute is chosen doesn't change the meaning of what's said, as far as I'm concerned. I avoid the "forbidden" words only because I know that some folks have a problem with them.
For me, the line is drawn where people start pulling "arguements" out of thier @$$es that have nothing to do with the subject of the debate, no supporting facts, and/or intent to demean.

one of my only problems is when there is actually an intelligent argument/conversation going on, and some arbitrary third party intercedes with comments that make everyone less intelligent for having read them, which eventually results in the mods locking the thread. should the thread be locked because of one person's stupid remarks?
i also have a problem with pre-emptive locking of threads. by this i mean locking threads because "i had a feeling it was going to go sour." if the thread goes sour, then lock it. not before. because frankly, you don't know that it's going to go sour. and don't anyone get all preachy on me about how i should respect the judgement of the mods.

It's obvious what's a flame and what's a legitimate argument most of the time. If you have someone saying "you're a -blam!- idiot" then that's quite obviously a flame. If they say "I don't agree with you, here's why" then that's a legitimate argument.

This only happens if the subject to begin with contravened our rules. But really, there are types of threads that are guaranteed to get out of hand - things like "Which is the best country?" But in the end, what we say goes.

resistance is futile, eh? *spits*
if i were ever a mod, i think i'd have to change my name to "The Man." that way, it really would be "The Man" keeping you down.

I'll hold you to your word, goweb. I’ll have to assume the rest of the mods agree with you and your statement, if not, respond now or forever hold your peace.

Well we're told to use on best judgement on threads we're not sure about. So if it's locked, feel free to message the mod or another mod and file a complaint.

I'll agree with Goweb for 500 points.

Yeah, goweb has basically layed it out for us, and he's right. It's really a judgement call on the mod's part, and as Yoozel said, I think someone has said something about a system for filing a complaint about a locked thred, so I'm hoping that comes around soon.
