If we had his IP address it would not be a problem we could just ban his IP range from our servers.

The person that is said to be doing is Zagan on 1.04 a former [BM] clan member. He has xfire as well.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Okay, thanks.

Um guys, its not just one person doing this.. there is a program you can download that im not going to name it and obviously not link it to you, but this program is the one that shuts down servers and its publicly available.

Said person also spread it to dozens of people over xfire.

What is it?
A few days ago, an exploit was released for the latest version of Halo. This exploit allows anyone to crash the server at any time. At the moment, there are no fixes for it, we just need to wait for the developers of the dedicated server to fix it.

Is there anything I can do?
Not really, the only possible defense against it would be to keep your server full at all times, as the exploit acts like a player and if the server is full, it does not function.

Note: Even though the exploit needs an open player slot to work, passwording your server has no effect on it. While some people are reporting that passwording it seems to be fixing the problem, the server is still vulnerable to it. What I suspect is happening is the scripts that are querying the master server are ignoring passworded servers. So, your server may be up longer if you password it, but it's by no means a workaround.

Unofficial Patch
An unofficial patch has been created by Goemitar. You can visit his website here or download a fixed binary. As of right now we are working on getting this rolled out to our servers

Can't you just IP ban them?
It's difficult to determine exactly where the attacks are coming from, as the network protocol is encrypted, and the exploit appears to be a normal client until it sends a malformed packet. Also, Halo doesn't log any information by default, so we really do not have anything to go by

What servers are effected?
Any server on the master list will be effected by this.

Should I create a support ticket about this?
No, there is nothing that we can do until the developers release a patch for the dedicated server.

Who can I contact about getting a patch?
The dedicated server is not supported by Microsoft, nor by Bungie. Instead, you need to contact GearBox Software, which you can do at the following link: http://www.gearboxsoftware.com/index.php?p=contact (Note: Please do not spam them, that will not help the situation. One request per user asking when the patch will come out is more then enough)

When/If the patch comes out, how can I update my server?
I'm not sure which method we will be using yet, however you will either need to reinstall your server, or there will be a button in the Mods area of your control panel. It is unlikely that your servers will be automatically updated.

AND NO HALO IS NOT DEAD....I belong to a clan of 150 and we pay around 200 a month for our servers...I know of at least 12 other clans that do the same,,,We have a league that we have participating in for about 2 years. Total number of players 800. and there is twice as many people online then H2.

you can't block the packet unless you sniff the packet and then if you run more than a few servers your going to seriously degrade your server performance, and don't say block the port either since it goes over the same port halo uses. There is a community fix out that seems to work on XP machines but not dedicated 2003 server boxes (not fully test but thats the way it seems).

We tried to apply patches last night and to no avail..We have a server 2003 box and apparently this patch like Doc said does not work..Hopefully someone can come up with a fix for this.

Dude, I've been playing this game since spring 2004. I've seen what it was like back then and compared to what it is today, yes it is in fact dead. How many people play this game a couple thousand at best? Bungie has abandoned this game. Microsoft has abandoned this game. Gearbox has abandoned this game and the majority of the original player base has abandoned the game. I've been playing for four years and I still am, because the game is still fun. But it's still a dead game, just face it. No ones going to swoop in here and fix all the little issues with a four year old game just because the handful of people who still play it whine and beg for it.

Ok look, not trying to be the jerkwad here, but this game is DEAD! No one is going to fix the problem, because a) Bungie/Microsoft don't care about a dead game. b) Petitions just don't work. (not to mention they aren't allowed on this forum) And c) you post about a problem that's never been discussed to my knowledge and you haven't given us any proof to go by, no links, nothing. How do you know this isn't a random crash of the server, maybe it's crappy?

If you can bring some sort of proof that this is actually happening then you can bash me all you want. If you can't then take your petition and shove it.
2 days later, a patch is released.

lol.
