The next person to assume I am talking about ranked, do us all a favor and look at what I play!

Dual wielding should be better at close range than AR but due the damage nerf (while dual wieldin, each weapon deals only 75% of normal damage, total damage output is only 150%)
and the fact with AR you can use grenades it's not that great. But this is one reason why BR is so used even on short range (IMO it seems so). And since BR is so good at short range, people keep AR as nuisance as it doesn't offer anything BR can't do. There ain't much reason to switch AR even on short range despite it being slightly better there. And that slight part can be forgotten with good aiming.

You, obviously have not been into a game of anything other than "hardcore" for a long time. The AR beats Dual Weilding at close range due to meleeing and grenades. Melees break sheilds. Grenades break sheilds. In the time that you spend getting in range to hit me with a spiker blast, I could have your sheilds broken with a fistfull of deat zooming at your head. Now to adress your other point. The BR is not a good close raneg weapon. It is simply not made for that. It takes about four seconds to BR kill at optimal range. BR optimal range is at a distance where an AR guy can still hit you with a grenade then riddle you with bullets. THen, of course, there is the part about firing modes. Automatic weapons are better at short range. The melee then headshoot aproach works, but it incredibly risky and dangerous. TO do it, you have to melee clash very quickly from contact, before he can weaken your sheilds so that he can punch you to death. You have to strike first, then shoot him in the head. I have doen this twice with the pistol. I would not recommend this to anyone if they had an alternate, better suited weapon available. THis all happens in the time of anywehre between one or two seconds. You only have about half a second to respond in this way to an AR attack, and that is lucky. 90% of the time, AR wins at close range. I have specialized in that, and trust me, In a head on CQB duel, the AR will win over the BR if both sides have no grenades, and are loaded and at full sheilds. Most clashes are mutual charges, with the winner being determined by the final melee. This is inescapable in normal play. This kind of contest favors the AR due to its faster damage rate and lack of need for a headshot bonus. To cut a long story short: AR is a better CQB weapon than the BR.
