I've loved the BR from day one of Halo 2. I felt with this new weapon coming to Halo it would become more competetive, in so many ways. Guess what, I was right. With the BR, we were able to make Major League Gaming got big. Now we got everyone saying "Get out BRed" or "Wow get embarresed". This is what makes a game worth playing.Actually, Halo:CE was more competitive than Halo 2 and much more than Halo 3. The reason MLG grew was because of the overall Halo population growing and Bungie's ability to come out with garbage settings for MM. The reason why the BR is big for MLGers is because it functions with good range and deals headshots, and it replaced the weapon that most old-timers can agree is more preferred, the M6D Pistol from Halo:CE. If the Halo 3 M6G Magnum was a 4 or 3-shot instead of a 5-shot and it had a scope and as much or more range as the BR, then that would be the starting weapon. The whole concept of the MLG settings and playstyle is based on balance, teamwork, and the fast-paced fun that was like Halo:CE (with Pro settings); the BR as a starting weapon is really the only weapon that can give them that.
Before Halo 2, we were all saying "get 3-shotted nub". But, when Halo 2 came out, the BR was actually somewhat frustrating since it had such a wide spread, and then they fixed it by tightening the spread and it was better. It's all about the precision in a single line of fire; that is where the satisfaction of raping someone's face comes from. The H3 BR is like an AR except a slightly tighter spread, a scope, and functions with burst fires. The H3 Magnum, even with its lack of balance and range, is a much more hardcore weapon.
Unfortunately, Bungie has designed their weapons so poorly that MLG is really stuck with the BR. Well, until Halo:Reach comes out and the weapons are more precision-based and balanced around mid-range (I can only dream).
