Subject: The Only BR/AR Thread

The only thing I could say that would improve the game personally for me is if Team Slayer had the pistols removed and Team BRs had the AR removed. Personally I can't stand games (GoW for example) that have two spawning weapons at start. Check out multi-flag BRs for example, the AR has been removed from the secondary and I think the game becomes soo much smoother and fun.

(NOTE: I <3 AR, but I do enjoy the BR)

I've seen my family fade away, You've taken my whole life left me nothing to say. Sitting in silence with heaven above me i prayed every night by their graves. I search for closure i feel it no longer i can't turn my face away. I stand before you Ive seen what I've had to but now i leave your sight to avenge my family, I've taken my whole life there's nothing left to say.

I'm still anti-BR, but I use it because I have to. I remember the absurd amount of aim assist in Halo 2. I once picked up a BR and watched an enemy walk in front of me, and as he did, the reticule moved across the screen at 1/3 of his travel speed, and I wasn't even touching the stick. I still don't see how the BR is better than the AR because it kills in fewer shots (optimal conditions.) These optimal 4-shooting conditions rarely happen. Frequently, the opponent typical takes anywhere from 6-10 bursts to kill, and the attack power decreases with range. Even though the first bullet is supposedly 100% accurate, it is not. i tested this on standoff, where I had two spartans facing each other on opposite sides of the map. I got a BR, and shot at hte target's head. It took all 12 bursts to kill him. And the BR is not good at close range. It can be beaten by spikers, AR's, shotguns, swords, plasma pistols, plasma rifles, SMG's, maulers, rockets, gravity hammers, brute shots, and flamethrowers, so it is by no means an ultimate weapon. In practice, it is actually a relatively weak weapon. It is most effective on enemies that are already injured, or when used with coordinated fire from other BR's. This is becuase getting the 4-shots and headshots that this weapon is famous for is rare and difficult. At close range, unless your opponent is already injured, you will probably lose a rush-melee duel. I do agree about the players who think that they are superior because of their usage of the BR. They have skill, but only in gametypes that are BR dominated such as MLG and SWAT. I recently played one like this in a team slayer match on assembly in social slayer. My team only had me and another guy, while the enemy team was full. The enemy team lost, and afterwards, the guy challenged me to a 1v1 MLG duel on blackout. At first, I dominated him. He only gained the upper hand by hiding and using sneak attacks. In open fights, I frequently bested him. Afterwards, I dueled him in a default settings game on snowbound. I overwhelmingly beeat him with a KDR of 5 to 1. He was excellent at stealth, but only decent with the BR, pathetic in direct confrontations, and abyssmal with other weapons. I finally have to say that I am glad about how bungie balanced the BR. My only complaint that doesn't have to do with killing with it or being killed by it is that it's too common a weapon, and for something so versatile it is too common. I think that on most maps, the number of BR's should be cut in half, and make people use alternate styles of combat instead of relying on one weapon. It would spice up multiplayer and make the BR, an important weapon, into a strategic resource.
I would say they place the br as often as they do the carbine.

The next person to assume I am talking about ranked, do us all a favor and look at what I play!

Carbines are quite rare; look at heatmaps.

The battle rifle used to be my second favorite weapon (first being the banshee). However, I began to dislike the gun more and more over time. The following two things began to happen more and more over time. I would shoot an enemy with about seven bursts just to have my kill stolen once my target's shields lowered and I would shoot someone twice in the head and melee them and somehow they wouldn't die and end up killing me. I have been doing better with the assault rifle simply because I know it better. I used to play Halo 3 at my friend's house before he had Live or even before I had an Xbox. Whenever I played with him I didn't know anything about the weapons so I simply used the assault rifle all the time and began to learn what the best ways to use it were.

I know if the br's counter part is so rare why not make it just as rare?

Do you think that could be due to the fact that shooting someone twice then meleeing isn't a kill on normal settings?

I personally don't really mind whether people prefer the AR or the BR, that's up to you. However, what is frustrating is when people claim that the AR takes more skill. That is an absurd statement to anybody who is any good at the game.

Furthermore, virtually all high ranked players prefer BR starts (at level 45-50 Team Slayer ARs ALWAYS gets vetoed for BRs unless it's Pit, or occassionally Narrows or Guardian since they're all good maps). Because virtually all higher players prefer BR start, at high ranks the weight on BR gametypes should be increased dramatically.
I understand that players who have just got the game probably want to run around spraying and praying with the AR because the BR is too hard - fine. But at higher levels, AR start means a 10 minute session of spawn killing and camping. There is no reason to believe that level 1s want BRs showing up as much as level 45s. In fact, there's every reason to think the opposite. Thus, matchmaking should cater to that.

More experienced players prefer BR starts because it gives them some amount of control over the battles they have. They can control the map as a team, since team shooting with a br is very powerful, and actually lets you play as as team. You don't have one enemy rushing you with nothing you can do.

Beyond team shooting and map control the BR is basically useless, other than for stealing kills. If everyone else on your team has an AR, grab an AR and AR/Melee. Stealing their kills does make you look nice, but it's a dick move and doesn't really do anything for the team.

The key to team games is working as a team. Otherwise, you're effed.

Both the AR and BR are fine the way that they currently are.

  • 01.21.2010 6:52 PM PDT

True true in my experience the AR mostly used for run and gun Br are good for nearly everything team oriented like mid to long range support Etc.

Yankee Doodle went to town...

The creation of both of the weapons bring great balance to the game. I will pick the BR over the AR almost every time personally but if others think otherwise so be it. I am a legit 5 Star General and the Battle Rifle has been a great companion on the way to my beloved rank. I <3 BR.

Br is the only way togo... it only takes 4 shots well for most of us. haha it has good range, you really dont have to zoom in to be affective, and u can use it for most any situation. ar is way to dependant on being close up with someone. it has little range no scope and usually leads to u dieing as well. aka no potential for multikills... hands down br wins this fight. case close

i think the Br needs to jam less when im being shot with an AR, and i thik the AR needs to be a tad weaker.

/my two cents

Stupidity is an AoE.

Wait wait wait

did someone in this thread try to use the argument that BR's should suddenly be the prevalent starts at 40 and up because "people prefer it up there"

the majority of 40+'s I play with are very much against that idea because the competitive community is literally full of jerks, and it's the competitive community that keeps pushing BR starts in playlists despite Shiska's frequent statements that, paraphrased, say "Yeah tough, people like AR's, deal with it".

AR's are fun. BR's are fun.I like both guns equally and honestly feel like anyone who's arguing strongly for one or the other as the only viable start is just sick of getting killed by the other gun.

Hold it right there.

Hello. Name's Brian. Look, if you're looking for a flame war with me, just open up the Flood and write up some not-nice things about religion and I'll bring my nukes to the party.

If you want some other way to contact me, you can forget it.

If you're interested in some of my work, you can check my homepage out.

AR=BR> Spiker*

Both weapons seem like equals to me. I can use each other as the moment requires and that's all I'll say. If I'm in a small passage, I'd use AR. If I'm in the open, I could BR a few people from afar and it would still work as well in CQB. I'd only use the one I'd have at hand.

Anyone wanna play some Team BRs?

  • 01.23.2010 8:14 AM PDT

Pk 4 Skillz1

See Other Side

My thoughts:

*The BR was designed with strengths and weaknesses.
*The weaknesses were added in to offset the strengths.
*It takes skill to use the BR like JonnyOThan said.
*The BR is as effective as it was designed to be.
*Bungie DOESNT have to fix the BR because it is the way they want it to be.

So, if you don't like the BR there is one real simple solution.......................Don't Use It

I couldn't have said it better myself :)

one for each situation, long-mid= BR and mid-close= AR

If you use an AR for long-mid range you got to fire in burst

FTFY

No seriously unless it's the only weapon you have or your secondary is a shotgun or something (in which case you planned horribly) you should not be using the AR for long range combat ever.
