Tbh the AR puts everyone on a level playing feild, ruling out any skill taken from halo 2, or EXPERIENCE earned from halo 2, to optimize the game for both new players and seasoned players, however, it should be removed as a starting weapon from ranked playlists, as it makes the Ranked Matchmaking Playlists hell, especially Lone Wolves. If you search in 4s, and are level 40+ in any Ranked Playlist, chances are you want a BR, and because of the lack of BRs on maps that people actually want to play, i.e Guardian, Assembly and Heretic, excluding Construct where there are 4 Brs at least, maybe 6 that i can think of, then the AR Starts alienates the players that actually have proper accuracy, and skill, and dont want to fight up close with a random weapon.
If i had a pound for every time i said "ahhh i want a ranged weapon, im doing so bad, if we had BRs we would be tanking" because ill be the first one to admit, i cant AR to save my life, and whenever i get a BR in a room full of Assault rifle spammers, and in any matchmade game really, i at least go positive...
My list of Pros for BR starts, and decreasing the amount of ARs on a Map, to that of the BR
1. intensified skill required in all playlists
2. improved matchmaking experiences for both seasoned players, and new players
3. gives players a fair chance to improve at the game, and progress through the ranks, and reach their potential faster
4. improves accuracy, and quality of play
5. encourages team play, and teamwork (team shotting, assist play, call outs) and discourages players from approaching seasoned players up close, because they will get 4-shotted if the experienced player is worth his salt.
6. makes close encounters more skill orientated and less about the timing of the melee to secure the kill (encouraging strafing, and jumping, crouching, and generally dodging fire), and discourages players from giving away stuuuupid deaths whereby players who just so happen to beat down the same time as you do kill you, as well as you killing them.
7. stops the rush for the BRs, which in some maps, particularly guardian, portray the BR as a power weapon, when its not, its a midrange rifle, thats accurate, much like the Assault rifle, except the rate of fire is compromised at the expense of damage, and accuracy, which makes it balanced, but coupled with the melee, it makes it rediculously overpowered, with players only having to hit a quarter clip, and a beatdown, to score the kill, greatly disadvantaging seasoned players.
8. it also makes 50s in TS proper 50s, who are talented players, and who dont spam the assault rifle and beatdown, but strafe, 4-shot, and out BR to secure the kill, who know how to utilize teamwork, call outs, and team shotting, to be at the top of their game.
Im not saying remove the AR from the Ranked Playlists, but make it BR and Magnum starts? and make the AR as sparse as the BR is on maps now... or even, if they want to compromise, change the Team Slayer playlist, so that players keep their current rating/EXP into 100% Team Brs, so that players have both a BR and an AR at the start of a match.
Newer players wont move up to the higher levels (35+ really) until they progress to the BR.. this way all the better players will move up the ranks, leaving the lower ranks fairer for new players, and the higher ranks fairer for the good players, improving the learning curve for both levels.
I say in the late days of Halo 3, this is an excellent idea, and will bring players back to halo in droves, think about it, alot of the good players have abandoned halo because they are sick of getting killed by the AR/Melee combo, and all the AR users have given up because of players using the Br... How is this POSSIBLY a bad idea?
