I was just reminded of the first book (The Fall of Reach). In one of the earlier chapters, quite possibly the first one, a group of spartans lead by the chief lays a bunch of fusion cores or mines (some explosive device) in the ground on the top of a ridge. On the other side of the ridge a plethora of grunts, jackles and some elites have set up a camp.

Basically what happens is the fastest spartan Kelly leaps on top of a rock and snipes a few unsuspecting covenant while her comrades leap up and start laying down some surpression fire with their rifles. Instantly caos ensues as a huge mass of covenant races up the hill to take on this enemy. A group of banshees races in flying low over the covenant troops and as they reach a certain point the explosive devices are detenated annilating the attack craft and sending the advancing troops flailing across the landscape.

Ok, so there's the back story that got me thinking about a potentially cool feature for halo 2. During the E3 coverage there was talk about some fuel cells or power cores (or some other explosive barrel type structure) that could be dropped on your enemy or shot while and enemy was near them causing them to explode and take the enemy with them.

What I'm thinking is what if that structure was in the campaign mode. Basically it would allow you (in co-op) to create a 'trap' of sorts. Say you know that a rather large group of covenant is just around the corner, so you assemble a group of these explosive stuctures, cluster them just on the side hidden from the covenant. Then send your buddy on a 'bait run' where he more or less fires enough rounds to get the enemy ticked, and allow them to find his position then turns and runs for cover. Then as the covenant swarm around the corner you light the fuse (shoot a fuel cell or whatever they are), wait for the explosion, then go clean up the stragglers.

For those of you who are thinking, ' but wait, that wouldn't work because the covenant won't chase you much past their spawn point'. Well, to that I would be force to point you back to an article that was released just a few short months after Halo 2 was announced to be in the making. Sadly I can't find the link to the page that had it online, but I'll continue looking and post it when I find it. In the article it talked about that nasty habit of the covenant liking to stay in one place (especially when in a room) and allow you to pop your head in, take a couple pot shots, then run back out the door to allow your shields to rechage. In short what the article said is that the covenant won't be playing dumb this time around and once they know where you are they will actively try to hunt you down. Should make it interesting, and in my opinion would open up the door for some extremely nasty 'traps'...
