I was looking around the Ideal Science (The company responsible for the B.net forums) website and found a screenshot of their new search engine!

Yea we had post count for about a month. A lot of users were competing to see who could reach 1000 posts first. Then 2000, 5000, etc....I was the only freaking mod too at the time and there was no ban tools either. Man did those days suck.

Does anyone remember Stosh's non-pink avatar in those days of yore?

Indeed I do.

  • 02.23.2005 10:44 AM PDT

Man, we do like going off on tangents, don't we? It started off by someone pointing out the search function might be close, and now it's about Stosh's avatar.

Anyway, I will probably never use the search function, I am too accustomed to my current method of navigation and thread saving to worry about searching for something.

4/12/2004 Bungie.net launch!...

4/19/2004 Bungie.net Update #1.
Well, actually we updated once early last week to get rid of the nav bar floating in the middle of the screen.
- The post counter is gone. Some people seem to think that there was a reward or bonus for posting lots of things. That will never be the case. Hopefully some of you (you know who you are) will knock it off now that the post counter is gone forever.
- The topic listings were increase to show 25 topics, rather than 10. This should help you read the forums much easier.
- We fixed a lot of the missing links that were caused by old bookmarks and such.

Looks like I had just missed that fun time. Looks like April-May 2004 was a good time to join Bungie.net or get a new login.

Oh, wait. I remember the new hotness change. I helped a frinde sign up for a passport account and a new Bungie.net login, I was new and couldn't figure out how to add a passport to an old account. You must have been able to add a passport to an old account because I see some dates for joining that go way back. You could.... right???

No, otherwise my member since date would still be November 25, 2003.

I can vouch for that.

I'm looking forward to this new search feature. Should help to deal with the repeated topics problem. Hopefuly, that is. We'll just have to watch and find out.

With all this hype on 'Ideal Science's website you'd think that Frankie would give us a little update. Everyone says soon™, but Ideal Science has pics of their feature, why is Bungie neglecting to tell the messes?

I mean for use in groups and for use by the mods in the public forums...are you saying you like problems?

Well if they put it on uses they thought were potential Spamers. Then it would be helpful for them. But it it was a automatic thing new users would be complaining alot.

Thats what I'm saying, give it to the mods as a kind of check to keep spammers down, also people who just got off blacklsts could have a certain alloted number of posts per day as a prevention method for more spamming

You could from November 2003 to April of 2004. Once the new hotness launched though, any non-converted accounts were deleted, as we thought 6 months was long enough to wait for people to transition to passport.

Oh, and regarding Ideal Science - I should point out that not everything you see there will make it here. We are using a custom build of that code - we have the source code, and I have modified it heavily. Certain things don't make sense in our forum, other things I have specifically disabled, and still others impact performance too much. However, that's the beauty of the system - it is very modular, so we can mix and match.

Most likely, what will happen, is in the next update you'll get search, and a few other changes that assist in finding interesting threads. Then, sometime later, we'll revisit the forums and add more stuff. Maybe.
