BUNGIE HAS CUT CUSTOM SINGLE-PLAYER SUPPORT FROM HALO 2 VISTA. COPY, PASTE, AND BOLDFACE THIS INTO YOUR SIGNATURE IF YOU ARE AGAINST THIS CUT.

Since Halo for the PC is no longer supported by Bungie, Gearbox, and Microsoft, it is highly unlikely that there will be an official patch for this.

I just ate my words with a side of fries. %-)

Words cannot express the thanks you should get for this. :D

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

I am definitely eating crow. Hats off to Bungie...just really stepped up and is getting on top of this very recent issue. I look forward to seeing something besides "welcome to halo pc 1.07." Having said all that, it really should come as NO shock to Bungie that Halo PC is still very popular, despite netcode shenanigans and of course the whole aimbot thing. I hope this renewed attention to Halo PC gives them an opportunity to remember how popular a well made PC game can become. Halo2 was given the shaft by M$ with Vista as a requirement, plus the port was pretty bad despite being a decent game inofitself. Don't let the same happen to Halo3 PC.

This is great, thanks a lot.

I am the official script writer and audio lead for a machinima group called RisingFilms, soon to change its name to RisingProjects.

Halo PC is the best for when I can't setup a LAN party.

Will this, in any way, affect how I run Halo on my Mac now or in the future?

Sawnose,

I really appreciate that you have taken time to help out this community of, as you point out, nearly 100,000 players. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time out and putting the effort in. I was also just wondering if you had copies of all the different aimbots, or if you were provided with copies if there maybe could be a relatively simple fix which could be implemented in the patch which you are releasing. Just thought I would throw it out there, figured there was no harm in doing so. Either way, once again, THANK YOU!

you are god. Straight up.
Sure this doesn't fix any of the hacking issues, and to be honest I haven't encountered this bug.

But just you coming and putting ANY patch out... even if it broke the game or made it worse, mean a ton to me dude. Thank you for at least putting forth minimal effort for this game. I truly appreciate the guesture and hell - maybe the patch will make me a regular player again.

Thank you for everything...I was so upset thinking that we may not get any help. Halo1 PC is the one game I truly love to play (maybe a bit too much tbh! lolz) and there isn't any other game that can replace it.......Halo 1 is a classic and in my opinion the best Halo ever made. ;-)

EDIT : WOW MY FRIEND JUST TRYED A CLICKBOT! AND IT DOESNT WORK ANYMORE WITH THE UPDATE!!!!!!!

love u bungie.

So there is no more bots working at all on the new version...
lets hope it will take time before some fool comes with a new hack.

I hope that's true!! That would be like the best thing to ever happen :D

Again, thank you lots n lots n lots!!!

BTW almost 100,000 different players in the last 30 days? HOLY CRAP I wouldn't of guessed that. Long live Halo 1 PC :D <3

Regarding aimbots - I've never personally researched anit-aimbot programming, but I imagine it would be very involved and intrusive into the codebase, to make a real, permanent fix that doesn't just become an arms race. Real fixes must involve kernel-level anti-debugger and anti-memory-snooping code, and remember, this game runs on Win98 too! Trying to tack in this sort of feature now would certainly open us up to many new compat problems and a number of iterations; the development time would be prohibitive.

Or let me put it this way: the game executable (including the patch released today) is wrapped with SafeDisc technology that is brand-name protection developed by a large company to prevent both copying and memory-intrusion attacks on the binary. And yet I'll bet that a large percentage of the game's regular users run utilities to un-safedisc the binary to save having to put in the CD; of course I'm familiar with them. If the 3rd-party commercial package we use to protect the code doesn't do the trick, you can bet that fixing the aimbot problem isn't just a matter of me sitting down and deciding to do so :-)

It's one of the big differences between the PC and the Xbox - the Xbox is designed from the start to be a secure platform, particularly when you're signed in to Live, and it brings a new level of fairness to games. The PC, on the other hand, is *your* platform, as the user. There are very limited ways of preventing you from doing what you want on your own PC, such as automating your aiming. The ways that have been fairly successful in other games have needed to keep evolving, and that's a level of support that Bungie can't sign up for, for an old game that wasn't even developed in-house.

Instead, I have to recommend judicious use of the banning and server-password features. Notice that your ban file is plain-text, and the community can feel free to pool their banfiles to build comprehensive lists of known cheaters.

P.S. - I didn't add anti-aimbot code in this patch. If current aimbots don't work, it'll be because the new executable has a slightly different memory layout; as soon as the bot programmers investigate, updated aimbots will unfortunately be back.

would it be possible then to just release something so few programmers who play halo can at least try to make the system better, one of the systems which i would love to have integrated into halo would be a punkbuster system.

its one of the few things thats been in my wishlist for a long time, a chance to offer more customisation into halo than just new maps (custom edition)

Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphors have two parts : form and interpretation; of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom being the briocoleus, the mason.

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Saw, for the most part the aimbot users have dropped significantly because they have just gotten bored with it. But it's still a heavily used excuse against anyone that shows any sort of aim.

EA doesn't even patch their new games let alone the old ones. Thats what i call support.

  • 07.04.2008 5:02 AM PDT

Wow, I don't play it, but I just wanted to say that's really admirable.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

I get on to this forum for the first time in weeks, and I am greeted with an update. Excellent.

Thanks a lot, but now I'm wondering. Does this mean the netcode can be fixed as well?

If my programming-fu was good, I'd work on it myself, but anyone with a great knowledge of code, might want to help me out and tell if this is possible?

  • 07.04.2008 6:20 AM PDT

And we all were waiting 3 years for the patch, and it's finally here. Also, a friend of mine tested the patch with the aimbot and clickbot. They do not work! Thanks again!
