The fact that you call nirvana "punk" is where your incompetence for music shows :)
I bet you didn't know Grunge was an off shoot of Punk. Grunge is a hybrid of Metal and Punk that blends Sabbath-like guitar rif-blam!-e with Punk's musical attack. It has growling, distorted and riff heavy songs like Metal, but uses stop/start dynamics and lyrical aesthetics like Punk.
Thus, Nirvana technically is a Punk band. It's not hard to conclude such a thing, considering that some of their major influences were The Pixies, The Melvins, Sonic Youth, and the Stooges.
I think Nirvana and Sabbath are two of the best bands of all time, but there are a lot of other bands that I like too (that should be on the list)... Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, The Beatles, Elvis, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Guns N Roses, Slayer, Run DMC, and a few others.
