who said that the index would release the flood. I dont think anybody thought that. Why is there no possibility that the index cant activate other halos. Its possible that the index is the only thing behind activating halo. I think that 343GS unlocked the index so that it could be retrieved, that would be impossible for someone else to break into it.

The index is just a key. She has a lot of info from the ring that she has't even decoded yet. That's what is slowing her down.

I'm pretty sure what happened. Ok so in First Strike COrtana it says cortana was having a bit of trouble b/c of the mass amount of info from halo. That might be the index. Thank you thank you, ill be here all day

First of all, calm down or leave this thread, because your ruining it. Second, its The Flood, not floods.

And I thought Cortana was just slow because of all her copies.

It's been a while since I read First Strike, but that's how I remember it, too.

For those of you who aren't going to read the books, you can catch up in the Halo 2 game manual when it gives you a two page rundown of what you've missed... the same way Halo's manual tells the basics of The Fall of Reach in about two pages.

On topic:

Whem MC gets the index in the library, 343 gs just teleports it to a safe location (remember, he can teleport things), then in the control room, he gives it to MC, who puts it into the control panel.. Cortana just makes a virtual image of it (since her image is virtual as well.)

Common sense I'd say

By the way, I was wondering: did you notice how at the end of the library, MC clutched the Index, as if it was solid, but then somehow it fit into 343 GS, as if it was Holographic Data, and then again, Cortana had it? What's up with that?
I don't care for the matter-energy conversion idea, that would produce a lot of energy. Besides, the data for converting the index back into solid stuff would include the data in the index itself. Forerunner technology includes teleportation, so I imagine that the green glowing thing was no more than a data storage device. It was teleported to some convenient place while the data it held, the actual index, was kept in Guilty Spark's shiny head. When GS gave it back to the 'Chief, he loaded the data back into a storage medium in accordance with the failsafe protocol that prevents GS from activating Halo on his own. The image of the data storage device was used as a symbol by Cortana for emphasis.

By teleportation, I don't mean some stoopid matter-energy conversion and reconstruction silliness. I like the popular idea that Halo's "teleport grid" moves people through slipspace, without any disassembly and reassembly.

I'm thinking the index is more than just a key, functioning like a password. I think it's more like a vital part of Halo's life-destroying functionality. An analogy would be carrying a vital part of your car's engine about instead of the ignition key. Someone suggested to me that the library stores information on various life forms, which fits well with its functions we've seen so far. Cortana doesn't say it explicitly, but the ambiguous wording leaves open the possibility that Halo destroys ONLY what has enough brain and total biomass to support flood. Perhaps Halo can only destroy life if it has certain information for, and the index has that information. It's not a sloppy, barbaric device but a surgically precise one that can only destroy if it has blueprints for what it's destroying. Guilty spark's not being able to activate it on his own might be a failsafe against someone reprogramming him to input an index of someone's enemies.

what he said^
its like computers today, the more stuff you have on it the slower it gets, at least that happens to mines...

Correction - the more you have on RAM the slower it gets. Apparently, in the future, they forgot how to use a friggin hard drive.

If ANY of you remember after the chief took the index 343 guilty spark took it from him instantly, saying: "I should hang on to this, you are prone to infection" Maybe a flood infection, deadly infection. If cortana has the index and its with her in the MC's suit well maybe he'll get infected and die or something

I disagree with the conjecture that the index is more than just a key. If you play through the Library, when you board the elevator for the last time, the horizontal bars come up on your screen and so do the words, "Fourth Floor: Tools, Weapons, KEYS to Superweapons...." Why would the gamemakers use this if the index were more than just a key?

Why Cortona is slow, when information is stored it is not always stored in one place, it gets broken up into peaces and stored where ever there is room for it. So when she goes to load something, the system has to scan through everything to find all the info, slowing down loading. On todays computers this is fixed by defragging your harddrive, I am not sure if they still use that in Halo. So its not just one thing, its the index and all the info she pulled from Halo, the copy of the covie AI, and anything else she is storing.

I've heard people say that einsteins equation E=MC^2 means that matter can be converted to energy (ie. A-Bomb) and vice versa. So this takes place in the far future where they can easily convert matter and energy easily.
e=pure energy m=mass c=speed of light
it means that if you converted an atom to pure energy, it would be somwhere around 23.5 million watts
