Thinking of something witty to write here since 2004...
Huge maps can work to a degree. Extinction 1 is just horrible due to the Human vs Covenant weapon/vehicle setup. Humans get Jets, Longswords and just invincible Pelicans as well as snipers which have unlimited range and are insanely powerful. They also get a proper, protected hanger for all their vehicles. Meanwhile the other team gets all the Covenant equivilents. The Seraph is highly inaccurate, weak as anything and no homing weapons. As an equivialnt to the jet it fails miserably. The beam rifle has a much shorter and much weaker range and the spawns, vehicles and weapons are just left in the open, free for spawnkilling by the humans who have greatly superior firepower.
If Extinction could be balanced it would be a better map.
Or better yet, look at all the huge maps, look at what inbalances them. Have a good, long think about what can be done to make it look better than those maps and to make it balanced. Like Static said, don't just throw in a bunch of random weapons and vehicles. Everything needs a purpose and needs to be balanced with the rest of the map. What happens if a player is left stranded out in the middle of nowhere?
Then plan your map, make sketches of the layout, teleporter systems (which I believe are needed in huge maps), weapons spawns, player spawns that are protected from spawnkilling. Again, it's planning and balance that makes a map, quality over quantity. You can have tons of custom vehicles and weapons thrown in but it will be utter crap. If you want recognition for what you've done, follow our advice.
