Well, know that they don't have shields. But we have never seen them in combat, perhaps thier armor holds up better under fire? Thus equating with the shield? (I know I'm reaching, don't point that out).

This would ultimately do nothing but take away from what the original Halo worked so hard at doing, which is defining itself in a genre (FPS) bogged down by half-assed, monotonous, remedial attempts. Halo brought a new life to the genre and set the benchmark at an all time high (arguably). One of the things that separated Halo from the rest of the crowd was the introduction of shields and health. The elimination of shields would effectively lead to the lost benefit of plasma-based weapons, thus having a devolving effect on Halo - If you ask me.
