Oh damn do I hate to say this -- but

There are probably a few ways to be an iritating butt-munch on Halo, I never tried these (obviously, I'm above anarchy... unless its laughing at people acting crazy trying to get to cover when I shoot JUST around them with my sniper rifle.)

1) Aimbots -- Sure, lag kinda messes it up, but if people use them just as people stop momentarily... then again most players who snipe a bit can trace people like this without any assistance.

2) Server Overflow -- Frig it pisses me off when crap like this happens on Telnet games, most of the time its caused by Hardcode going frigged (IE: Something Halo PC never has to worry about, its code is holeless pretty much), but basically its just munching servers with information until they crack. BTW: People trying to do this -- it has been classified as a felony and you can in fact be put away for a nice long time for doing this... because it has been known to over-work hardware past their breaking point... and Bell Telecom replacing routers over a frigtard who wants to piss off a server full of gamers will not take it laying down.

3) (possible) false-reporting to the Server, if the server thinks you're somewhere you're not shooting something you're not because your computer says you are -- doesn't matter who's the authority, both computers say you're messed.

4) Using objects the server doesn't have an entry for -- How will a server react to that? Ex: New gun with a bottomless sniper clip and 100x zoom >.> The server might say "Uhm... I see sniper bolts -- I don't know whats shooting them, but that guy just died"

The server controls where you are. All you tell it is which button you've pressed.

The server controls when you pick up an object by seeing which button you pressed and where you were on the field. If there's a weapon there then it'll let you have it. If not then it won't.

So, goweb, if I understand you correctly then each PC is basically a dumb terminal as far as processing game events goes... all the rendering is local, but the processing is done server-side. In essence, the keyboard and mouse are hooked up to the server with the PC simply sending the inputs along; the server looks at those inputs and generates the events, which it feeds out across the network.

That would drastically cut down on cheats, wouldn't it? Interesting... horsepower intensive, though, which would explain the high bandwidth requirements.

Got it in one Steve. You are actually watching a simulation of the real game, which is being played on the server.

wow, this is a interesting, and very smart way of doing things. I was always wondering how other games were able to host so many people(ie. counterstrike can host 32 ppl when ppl have good connections). It would be labor intensive(as said before) on the servers, and now i am much more knowledgeable on how Halo works. Thanks everyone for making a good post and some very intersting points. It was enjoyable to read and very intersting.....

I COULD hack with certain modifications on my Halo properteries item. but i only did a cheat that i will never have to get killed right after i respawn (like that's going to work)

I agree with all you guys that say their are no mutliplayer cheats for Halo PC. I've been playing since it came out and have always done well. If there are cheats, they aren't helping :). I also found the post about client side versus server side interesting. I know the infamous counterstrike is server side whch opened up the door for all manner of cheats. I played that game for 4 years and believe me I saw it all. If I remember right, server side games used to be the norm but required that everyone have fast connections to have a good game. Activision Battlezone was server side, and suffered from horrible lag no matter how good my personal connection was (I was at University then). If everyone else had crap connections, my game sucked too. I think now there is becoming a difference between the "online" gamer and the traditional gamer with mostly single player. The online typically shells out more money and has high bandwidth at home. I also think, just my opinion please don't flame me, that the old DSL versus Cable clearly came down in favor of cable. It almost always has lower latency. Cable gamers have a very steady experience without lag spikes.
