I would have loved to see the jackals and grunts end up as combat forms or something else. Granted there is only so much room in making a game, but I think it would have been hilarious to see those as flood as well. The elite and human combat forms are alot of fun to kill, but since live grunts and jackals are a big part of the game it seems like they would have eventually found there way into the flood ranks. How about a hunter flood??? Since the flood like to gather bodies, maybe they just eat the grunt and jackal bodies, and are too lazy to move the hunter bodies!!!!! Now that would have been a great cinematic, a bunch of flood around a campfire (one with a guitar of course!) gnawing on them grunty bones!!!

The Jackal and Grunt bodies aren't large enough to contain a flood infection form, nor do they have sufficient calcium deposits in their skeletons. At least, that is the in-universe explanation as I understand it.

They do go into the make up of carrier forms, though.

When the game first came out, I thought the Infection Forms (aka Flood Jr.) were ex-Grunts. They had a similar shape and made weird little noises.
Also presumed the Juggernaut Flood in H-2 was a former Hunter.
Was probably wrong about that as well.

Grunts & Jackals are used for Carrier Forms. Their legs are the ony part of them you can see anymore. Their DNA changes so they can spawn popcorn.

Didn't know that one.
I read somewhere (manual or something) that carrier forms were 'combat forms that were too badly damaged to be effective anymore.'

Sometimes you just gotta say, Bucket!

a hunter is made up of multiple alein "worms", anyway the flood infection couldn't take it over because it was more then one creature.

Grunts are the walking eggsacks, spawning all the little flying zits. As for Jackals... I'm sure they were treated like a kit kat bar by the Flood.

Might as well add that the Brutes couldn't be infected because they lacked neural capacity for the Flood. Funny how all that changed when Halo 3 came out.
