Hullo there. This is for all members of the Seventh Column. I was just curious if any chapter founders would be interested in chapter Avatars, perhaps about the size of your personal ones here in the forum, or larger, smaller, whatever you'd like. Please just speak your mind on this, but I thought it would be a neat system to set up for when the Seventh Column catches up to the rest of Bungie.net. It would be a great identification system for chapters, besides simply the name. I know Bungie isn't very keen about custom avatars, but it would be nice to have some just the same... I'm sure there's a lot more ideas for what the next version of the seventh column could include, but I thought this was one that deserved a mention. Thanks guys, and again, thoughts or ideas welcome.

Theoretically it'd be a good idea, but with over 10,000 chapters, all that checking would take a lot of time.

*shrugs* true, just a thought. Part of the "New Hotness" perhaps?

  • 06.25.2004 6:21 PM PDT

Not even that. The problem is that all the avatars would need to be checked to make sure that they weren't objectionable. This would quite obviously take a lot of time. It's likely that Bungie will want to use that time to create an even hotter hotness.

*laughs* true, I agree. I'd rather have something else that's better, but I would like some way for chapters to be identified other than by name. Perhaps if Bungie came up with classifications of chapters with their appropriate avatars? Such as local LAN groups, informational chapters, online playing groups, and others... Kind of like what they are doing for individual players on xbox live.

bah

Checking them wouldn't take too long. Hell, why not just have the mods check them, or highly trusted forumgoers could help a bit. Or, just slap on the message that all avtars will be checked, and no one will even bother to submit objectionable ones. I've got tons of time on my hands to help with -blam!- like that! I think each chapter should be able to have their own avatar. Have maybe 100x200 resolution. That's about 10k gif, by the way, unless you get really complex.

Perhaps they could come up with a database of customizable avatars? Just a collection of random symbols of varying colors that the founder could select from and arrange. It could be done in a manner similar to customizing the sidebar. That is select preset images and their colors that would be layered on top of each other sequentially to form unique emblems. Of course there would be a limit to how many 'layers' an image could have, and it would be very technically demanding to implement...but I think the wizards at Bungie could pull off something like that. ^_-

bah

I'm still all for the having text over avatars. I could have a "R-S" text over mine, Banshee Barron could have a "BB", Mr s could have a ":)"!

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it. I like the idea, Surge, but it would, as you said, be difficult to implement. Perhaps you could pick an iconic emblem from a bungie game (master chief, that myth guy, konoko, guilty spark, a longsword, the POA) and have a symbol (like the ones from marathon or the forerunner buildings) over it to denote the nature of your chapter, like information providing, local LAN, internet gaming, etc. Then you could have text initials with it, Like Rip said. For mine, for example, it would read "O.C.R.C." You could fill out that info like you do when you make your user profile here, except it would be in your chapter form. It would combine into a unique logo for your particular group. I know that Bungie knows what it's doing, but I really hope the "new hotness" includes something like this in it.

Checking them wouldn't take too long.
As of now, there are 11,025 chapters. If everyone of those decided to have a custom avatar, do you still think that it wouldn't take a long time?

  • 06.26.2004 3:19 AM PDT

Spamming Bungie since 2004!
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
GT-I Final I (i's)
Plz uze prper inglish n ur poasts!11! it makez it eazeer 2 reed!

Well, around 5,000 of them really aren't active, so let's see here...around 6,000 avatars to check, that'd take around a month, which is almost how long it took my chapter to be accepted, so I can live with it.

  • 06.26.2004 4:06 AM PDT

You wouldn't be the one doing the checking though!

Heh, that and the fact that when the new hotness gets going, more chapters will be springing up, giving whoever more avatars to check. Yuck. Too much checking.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much checking. i like Rip's idea about words over or avatars.
but how about this: Right under your name, it says "member". maybe the oppertunity for this to be changed to our chapter name. and members could have the same oppertunity.
you know, they could make a dropdown-menu, with all the chapter we are member of, and we can select one.
I think that's a nice way to promote chapters too.

so it would be like this:
just another fan
chapter something
avatar

Also, in this way, people who aren't chapter founders can promote the chapters they like.
just a thought, that is.

Yeah, that's definately a great idea. After all, chapters can make thier own custom emblems to show off in H2.

Thanks again for the input guys. I know the checking would be tedious, but if Bungie came up with a system of sorts to combine elements into a custom logo, it should work without a hitch, in theory at least ;) I like Just Another Fan's idea about changing the subscript for our personal avatars though. Good thoughts, everyone.

This question is how many of those are actually active.

hotter hotness.

yay! for hotter hotness!

  • 06.26.2004 6:07 PM PDT

If you just had moderators, each would have about 1500 to check!

  • 06.26.2004 7:27 PM PDT

bah

Well, if you factor in the non-active chapters and the people who are too lazy to make an avatar of their own, I'll wager under 5,000 chapters would have to be checked. At a mesely 10k a piece, even on a 56k, it shouldn't take more than a few soconds to download one. The longest part would be the approval process. Moving the approved ones form where they are to a new spot. That's a maximum of eight seconds a piece right? Moving files in my FTP doesn't take very long. So about ten seconds an avatar. We have 7 mods, you can most easily trust several others, so let's say ten people. 5,000 avatars, 10 people, 500 a piece, ten seconds a pop, 5,000 seconds to do it. That's an hour and less than a half to check their fair share. Hell, I'll do it just to get my own avatar! Of course, this depends wildly on how Bungie sets up the FTP space to check them. And if my estimate is off a bit, the time could takre a whole lot longer. But it's not as bad as you think. Hell, I'll do the whole thing personally, if not just for the fame it will bring me. (Think instant stosh fame level from appreciative founders!)

Now, cue stosh saying no one will ever be as famous as him, and also cue Archronos to tell me why my idea would take ten times longer than I think.

You're forgetting that we'll also have to ask Sketch about avatars we're not sure about, wasting his time too. It's going to take more than ten seconds to approve.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

And when all new chapters are submitted to be approved, all new ones will submit avatars . Just like almost all new ones have themes, even if they never have posts in them.

Exactly, the administrators would just take a glance at the logos when the chapters are submitted. It would only take a second or two longer.

  • 06.28.2004 11:15 AM PDT

For new chapters, I suppose it wouldn't be too bad. But you'd have to do it retrospectively, which would eat up the time.
