Hi there! me15ter again.

I previously posted my problem in which i couldnt play halo online. Every time i connected, there was a "Halo can't connect to the network" error msg. and i wasnt even able to reach the Multiplayer Menu. Someone suggested that it was my ZoneAlarm firewall causing the problem, so i uninstalled it and the game ran perfectly.

However, ZoneAlarm was a kick-@$$ program which REALLY protected my computer.

Is there any way to keep ZoneAlarm AND run halo online?

Thanks...

I dont know about Zone Alarm, but with Mcafee I can "grant access to internet" to certain programs. When I first installed Halo I couldnt get on because I didnt grant the access yet. I minimized Halo and then clicked "grant" in the popup and was ready to play. Good luck.

just turn off Zone Alarm when you play.

I have Zone Alarm Free and I dont get the problem you describe. It might not be your firewall at all. Do you hav Pro or Free ZA?

Turn off ZoneAlarm..been there, done that. And reset its firewall properties. And cleared all possible programs for internet access. And...more. Until i couldnt take it anymore.

Thanks for the help so far... any other suggestions?

well, i don't have zone alarm, so i can't walk you straight through it, but if you open the ZA toolbar, there should be an option like 'grant internet acess to the following aplications,' and all you have to do is find the halo.exe in your halo folder and add it to the list.

McAfee = $$$

ZoneAlarm, even if disabled, leaves 'remnants', although the company says it doesn't. Read it in Maximum PC, apparently there's been lots of letters.

I used to use ZoneAlarm all the time and never had any problems when it was set to 'medium'. I can't say anything about what it's like now though, I don't use it anymore... In the end it just became too much hassle...

Wait, so you set ZoneAlarm to medium? What version ZoneAlarm? I have the latest version ZoneAlarm(or rather, "had") and whatever i tried, from allowing all programs to access the internet, to deactivating the firewall, to shutting down ZoneAlarm, didnt work...

Ah (responding to SLD), so ZoneAlarm does interfere with other programs. Thanks. By the by, do you know of any other types of free firewalls you can download?

Thanks for the info so far, people, youve been a big help...

Well, SP2 gives a pretty hardcore one for most stuff, plus pop up blcokers and such. I use the SP2 one in conjunction with my router's NAT/SPI. IF you have a router you probably have one, just not too strong.

Knowing you, Im really sure your information is correct, SLD, but i dont think SP2's firewall is effective enough. I have a router, but im not sure if i get a firewall too.

Do you know of any useful firewalls that you can download free from the internet?

Nope, all of the firewalls I know of require some $$$. I think that McAfee's is about $20-30, and it doesn't get picky with stuff like online games. SP2's firewall is basic, yes, but it is free - so I guess you could say that's the only free one I know of.

A NAT/SPI firewall is built into most new routers. Older ones have a less secure one. How old is your router?

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin, they might have a free demo or something but I like it. If you unblock the 3 ports that halo uses, you should be able to play. Don't know if you can but make sure that port 80 is not blocked as well as 2302 and 2303. Port 80, I belive, connects to the server data base and the other two allow you to play and host games.

Before you bring up Halo, connect to the internet, then click multiplayer.

Been using Zone Alarm for ages. Never had any problems with any programs. I also run XP SP2 but don't use the XP firewall as I have a hardware router/firewall/NAT box as well.
Sorry, but I can't think why it would be causing problems, EXCEPT, I have heard it's not very happy on AMD 64 rigs...??
