Xbox senior VP Don Mattrick has explained the delay of Bungie's new game, which he's seemingly gone and confirmed as both a Microsoft product and a new Halo game. That's keeping it under your hat, Don.

Speaking to the LA Times, Mattrick admitted that Bungie is in fact working on a new Halo game, and that it was originally planned to appear at Microsoft's E3 press conference earlier this week.

According to Don, the Bungie title was pulled at the last minute to trim the Xbox presentation to under 90 minutes. "We had an embarrassment of riches," Mattrick said. "We felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event."

The positive bit, he said, is that Microsoft has built such a solid foundation that it no longer needs to depend on one or two games to succeed. "Two big kahunas were left out of the show, and we were still able to deliver a strong performance," he commented.

We know we're not the most qualified bunch to start drafting E3 strategy for Microsoft, but couldn't it have cancelled the embarrassing, 3 minute on-stage performance from Duffy, and given us a Halo trailer instead? She's pretty and everything but the trailer would've been lovely.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

I wonder when they will announce it?

Don't worry, we will see this game very soon. It was for the better that Microsoft cut it out of the Press Confrence, let me get the link so you guys understand.

We will see this game very soon my friends, I'm guessing PAX 08 (August 29-31)-

Microsoft's Don Mattrick says -

… to help trim its E3 presentation to under 90 minutes, from 2 1/2 hours, to accommodate attention-challenged reporters. “We had an embarrassment of riches,” Mattrick said. “We felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event.”

So don't worry about that rumor of people saying, "The game was so bad Microsoft wouldn't let Bungie show it".

Infact, it seems to be the opposite. It looks like Microsoft was so happy with it, instead of cramming it into the Press Confrence, they want to announce it somewhere else to give Bungie more time to show it off.

Other then a great ARG being ruined, this could turn out for the better.

Well feel a bit letdown by this. But not that disappointed.

Although MS is the direct party and told Bungie to postpone this announcement until later, I don't think they are to blame for acting like this. Why is that? Unlike some of you who thinks MS does not respect the developer and has acted like a heartless scum, I'm sure they know that Bungie's announcement of a new game that may/may not be a continuation of the story to Master Chief is a very important trump card to them.

As their E3 conference this year is more or less a success (with GOW2, Fallout 3, RE5, FFXIII), they are letting the other 3rd party developers a chance to shine with their games. I think MS knows that an announcement of a brand new game by Bungie may overshadow the other games that are due in the near future. Besides even if Bungie announces this new game it wouldn't be available for another 2/3 years so they felt they can afford to delay this.

Bungie can concentrate on developing this mystery game for more longer. Once Sony/Nintendo starts to unveil something epic, MS have this trump card to show off in due time. Anyway to Bungie: Good work! Although you couldn't show us anything yet, I'm sure once the time is ready there will be more things for you to show. :)

For the record.. I'm not bellyaching.. but the Anti-announcement seems kinda' weird.

Imagine how much nicer this would have played-out if they just kept the Superintendant stuff rolling, and perhaps had someone at E3 flash a superintendant card, and never said a word about postponing anything.. No release of information, just a big.. "nope.. nothing to see here" and kept going with the superintendant thing back at the site.

A lot of people enjoyed the superintendant thing, is there REALLY a reason to stop it now?
No date yet, no big reveal yet.. but if they had acted like this was all in the plan, I think it'd get more attention than it is now. Everyone KNOWs there was an info release coming, and so when it doesn't happen, it creates suspense when it comes from Bungie.

Microsoft's info release was lame. "Oh, we already looked good at E3, so we didn't want to overdo it." yeah ok, and the news resulting from clamping down on Bungie's release information isn't desirable at all? They didn't just clamp down.. they ANNOUNCED they'd clamped down (repeatedly). Bungie's not owned by them anymore, so the deal refers to a publishing delay?

I'm not sure why Bungie stated that their publisher was blocking this, rather than clarifying that M$ was blocking it. Especially since M$ is all over the place going.. "yep, we're cool.. not wanting to spill the beans yet....Hey! see that everyone?! we have BEANS that you'd like to SEE, but we're.. 'ho hum'.. not yet, we did enough to our competitors at E3.' We're just cool like that" Sure.. just like Gates had HIS mouth shut about Halo 2 And 3's production and initial relase date info? Yeah.. THAT'S a success story waiting ot happen!

Is Halo going multi-platform? I hope so. It would sure beat having Microsoft control everything like this.

The fact that everything stopped, points to a LONG delay here.. what a shame. Unless of course they're coming out to DragonCon in Atlanta on Sept. 1st to see the 405th, and wanted to release the info there?

One question for the informed though...
When you speak of delaying this announcement, are we talking about delaying it a week or two, a month or two? or (gulp!) a year or two?

I, for one, would certainly feel better having that kind of info at least, even if it's like a 2 month ballpark. It would also allow publicity to come to YOU for YOUR game, rather than M$ for their delays..

Anyways, looking forward to it.. (I'd even buy a $60 screensaver from you guys). Sorry about all the wasted time on that E3 video thing, I hope that it CAN be salvaged, and/or maybe redirected into a jab at this delay.. C'mon Luke.. you can do it.. umm..?.. use the force?
:)

Dear Bungie,

I don't want another damn Halo game, leave franchise milking to microsoft.

Also, when your president's name is an anagram of "HALO RAN DRY" I find this ironic.

This was a horrible E3 for me this year. I'm not a Gears fan at all, so all I have to look forward to from this E3 is Fallout 3 (I love RPGS). Microsoft just come's in and completely ruined Bungies ARG. Microsoft sure knows how to kill a party huh?

That's a remarkably level-headed post, Deadguy.

I must admit, the splash page announcement did seem more like an emotional kneejerk reaction than a considered PR response. I wonder if those responsible are regretting it now.

I'm just blown away!!!

This was done by Microsoft so that the attention would remain on current titles coming out this year. Halo is a console killer.. even killing all other games for its own console. It stops sales for other games, cause it sales so much, and rightfully so. And Microsoft figured.. lets save the new Halo for next year, and make all the money we can from titles like Gears of War and Fable 2.

I respect that they are being smart but there is no way in hell they should have backed out at the last minute like that. I could see them not saying anything at all but they obviously gave Bungie the green light to say a rumor, but then at the last moment they held back?

Bungie, we know its not your fault, for real. Please keep at it. I don't even need to ask you guys to do all you can to get this information revealed. It's not about the money to Bungie. It's about the game. Keep it going, my friends. Whatever you have in store for us, I know it'll be great.

Fight hard, have fun

Its just that everyone here feels jerked around (including me) but it is better in the long run...

It's not like it was a playable beta or anything...In reality it is better not to know now anyway cause then all the hype waiting for the next thing won't happen...

Now Bungie can have an empty stage to perform on instead of share a stage w/LAME GOW2 and GTA4 how tired are those? Can't even upgrade the graphics or animation engine...

Bungie will do us right...it is gonna turn out 'all good' for everyone trust...

Ehh, makes sence. This being one of the most dissappointing E3's yet for the toher consoles, maybe Microsoft didn't want to blow them out of the water... yet.
>:D
And plus, with the big old Final Fantasy bomb that was released at the end of the press conference, maybe Microsoft decided that another game from Bungie being announced would completely steal the spotlight from plenty of other deserving games, such as Fable II, GoW2, and Fallout 3. I forgot about all three of those games after seeing the Final Fantasy trailer, so maybe Microsoft thought the outcome would be even worse for these three if a BUNGIE game was announed.

Microsoft, in all their mysterious ways, have a plan. Betcha all the money in the world this is being announced at the Tokyo games conference. Keep hope.

To jump to conclusions with little or no information on the subjuct is stupid and not recommended.

What was the reason given for the publisher pulling the plug on the ARG or whatever it was intended to be?
