I think the fight is not yet finished... Just postponed.

In Halo: CE, Cortana states that the Halo's do not kill the Flood, they kill it's food.
In Halo 3 the Halo is activated, and we are led to believe that this killed the Flood.

So there are many questions that remain about the fate of the Flood...

Did the whole Ark explode, killing the Flood?
This would not work, as some Flood apparently survived the Installation 04 explosion.
(Can someone confirm this? I just vaguely remember something about this)

Did the Flood starve on the Ark?
I think they would have a reasonable life span. (Again, someone know more?)

How smart and capable were the Flood?
Would the Flood have been able to find a ship on the Ark and head back into the galaxy, or even activate the Ark's portal?

What did activating the Halo at the end of Halo 3 actually do?
Did it send out the 'death beam' or did it explode?

I don't think we can safely say that Halo 3 finished the fight with the Flood.

Discuss.

(I am not sure if this has been discussed recently, sorry if it has
I guess this could belong in the Halo 3 forum, but we all know that these sorts of threads don't last very long there, and it does tie in with Halo: CE...)

ok the game isn't over not only does it show a planet at the end of ledgendary ending. (which is probaly onyx) If you dont know what that is go out and get ghosts of onyx. Secondly in that book it says that there are 4 spartans other that master cheif left. So even if master cheif dies in space hthere will be 4 others to take over. And master cheif says "wake me when you need me." So I think that there will be another halo if bungie or the public demands it. Because there was a leak from E3 and a Halo:blue was supposed to be ammounced. Though no one says who the delvelpoper is. Wheather it is bungie or ensemble. or even just Microsoft game studios.. Oh and the arch sewnt out the beam and then destroyed itself therefore ever closing the portal. To earth or any where else for that matter. Also the ark is in a blackhole that is how the forerunners. A.K.A. humans made sure if flood got onto the ark they could close down the portal for good and let them starve. And the portal where the four spartans and DR.hasley are in is in a halo proof capsule. So the halo beam of death can not get them. But then again they are stuck in there untill the beam and threat has passed thanks to the security system. =)

Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth in single combat. And Morgoth came.

The gravemind would be dead, he is sentient. I think....

But the portal collapsed, the last dreadnought is destroyed or missing, and the ark, if heavily damaged, as cortana said, would most likely throw many flood into the vacuum of space.

The halo sent out the death beam, yes.

They did not survive the destruction of Installation 04.

The first in halo 2 had been contained in a lab.

  • 07.19.2008 4:12 PM PDT

Well, this does tie in to halo CE a bit, and the Halo 3 forum is a mess, so....

Correct, none survived Alpha Halo's destruction.

The replacement Alpha Halo fired, but wa salso destroyed, taking the Gravemind out along with it, as the Gravemind was attempting to rebuild itself on the ring, NOT THE ARK. The Ark was not destroyed; quote, "The ring shook itself apart. Did a number on The Ark.", unquote - Cortana, Halo 3.

I'm beginning to think the Dreadnaught plothole was intentional. The Flood would use it to escape The Ark and later find their way to the Milky Way again.

Oh yeah, one other thing I forgot.

How did the Flood contained in the Halo's survive the first Halo Array's activation?

(Also, this is about the Flood, not another Halo game)

Also, The Gravemind should have been smarter than to try rebuilding itself on the one thing that could destroy it, rather than on the Ark which is safe from the Array...

Did the whole Ark explode, killing the Flood?
It destroyed High Charity and the Gravemind, pretty much killing them.

Did the Flood starve on the Ark?
They could go into hibernation, and they did after the forunners activated the rings.

How smart and capable were the Flood?
They know everything about anyone they consume, so yes, it is possible, but I think they need a Gravemind to tell them what to do.

What did activating the Halo at the end of Halo 3 actually do?
It blew that Halo up, as it was not yet strong enough to hold together for an activation. That's why Master Chief survived.

343GS refers to firing a 'tactical pulse' that would destroy the local infestation, we can assume that a 'tactical pulse' is more powerful than the primary fire mode but has a much shorter range.

(P.S. the Flood can function without a Gravemind, the Keyes brain form, given enough time, could have turned into a Gravemind)

Would the Flood have been able to find a ship on the Ark and head back into the galaxy, or even activate the Ark's portal?Well, there was that big Dreadnought Truth had. If I had any money, it would be on Gravemind escaping on that thing.

ARBITER, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER!!! WORT WORT WORT.

Okay so you guys are forgetting the Halo in Halo 2. It had Flood on it. Those weren't killed by your precious moments at the Ark now right?

So the Flood isn't destroyed.

And if that Halo was activated, there shouldn't be any life on Earth at the end; there is though.

The Flood wasn't defeated as far as I can tell.

  • 07.21.2008 2:11 AM PDT

The Flood left Delta Halo via High charity, which the Chief then destroyed on The Ark. Flood aren't finished; there are 5 more rings.

You and chickenlittle make accurate and good points! Very interesting...
Unless Bungie just comes out and says "All Flood die without the Gravemind."
That would be a bit of a cop out.

Bungie made Halo, but Microsoft owns it. It's up to them if they want to hang Halo by the string above the mouths of Sony and Nintendo. Bungie just has control over the actual content, not distribution (of Halo).

Just message me on live.

No Carby, the story ties to Marathon. If Bungie made a new FPS it would probably be Marathon 3.

But the Flood would be on the different rings and other structures (gas mining station above Installation 04, etc.) - so no, the flood are not destroyed. I still don't understand why they just don't make latterly a billion sentinels to defeat the flood...

  • 07.24.2008 5:11 AM PDT

The Sentinels are meant for containment, not annihilation.

And if you read Ghosts of Onyx, you'd know that they tried that.

  • 07.24.2008 10:31 AM PDT

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.

What if there is another Gravemind?

  • 07.24.2008 11:24 AM PDT

If they tied up all of those loose ends you mentioned, how would they (MS) be able to milk the franchise for a half dozen more games?

....spongy, bungie, who cares? I got mine!

Well, it's activated, but it malfunctions because it isn't complete, causing something more like a nuclear explosion on an immense scale, instead of a blast that leaves matter and just kills sentient life.

As far as I remember, it was said that the Halos act also as a containment facility for the flood. Well there are 7 halos and we've only seen 2 of them. Yes I know you want me to say we've seen 3 halos but the 3rd was another Halo #04. So there is still flood contained on the other Halos.

And will we ever get to go to those other 5?
