alrightly. I'll post some ideas.
Did the whole Ark explode, killing the Flood?
This would not work, as some Flood apparently survived the Installation 04 explosion.
(Can someone confirm this? I just vaguely remember something about this)
when the ring exploded im pretty certain all the flood died. the flood you fought as the Arbiter in Halo 2 were not on the ring or from it. they were specimens locked up in the gas mine above the planet, released by the heretics. so blowing up the ark probably would kill all the flood.
Did the Flood starve on the Ark?
I think they would have a reasonable life span. (Again, someone know more?)
if they are still alive i would say that they can survive a long time. after all they survived from the death of the forunners until the present day of the game, so i cant see food being an issue.
How smart and capable were the Flood?
Would the Flood have been able to find a ship on the Ark and head back into the galaxy, or even activate the Ark's portal?
i cannot see the flood being too intelligent without a gravemind. evidence to support that-Halo 1, no gravemind, no flood in vehicles. Halo 2 and 3, gravemind, flood in vehicles and new flood types-pure forms. if the Gravemind survived i can see the flood being able to pilot a vehicle out, but then there are several factors.
1. finding a vehicle capable of slipspace travel. all the brute cruisers were destroyed, and the elite and human ships left. there was the crashed longsword on one level, but unless it's slipspace drive was repairable then i doubt it could be used. as the ark was so far outside the galaxy it would take thousands or even millions of years to cover that distance to even reach the edge of the galaxy, much less any space known to have life.
added to that-even with a slipspace drive, the best a human drive does is around 1.4 light years/day. too tired to go into the maths and figure out how long it would take to make it back to the galaxy, but seeing as jumps between human planets can take up to a year or so a journey from outside the galaxy would presumerably take far longer. i doubt a longsword has enough fuel to make the distance.
also i doubt the portal could be activated with the damage to the ark. could be wrong, but cant see it happening.
What did activating the Halo at the end of Halo 3 actually do?
Did it send out the 'death beam' or did it explode?
pretty certain it just blew up. if it did fire i cant see chief surviviing simply because he was behind a computer terminal.
but i do agree that the flood are not finished. my reasons.
I cannont see the forunners only having flood to study on two of the rings, 04 and 05. there are still 5 other unfound rings which most likely have flood on them.
and another theory which I just thought of-there actually is a way the flood may escape the Ark. the frigate on Sandtrap. goin by the assumption that bungie makes the multiplayer maps fit somewhat into the canon of Halo, then if that frigate has been left behind the flood could take over it.
well thats my take.
