Five Tenets of Bungie.net Forum Life:
1. Trolls will always be well fed.
2. Blame-ability thy name is stosh.
3. Bungie has no control over retail prices.
4. Watch out for low-flying defense drones.
5. Seven is not optional, but rather, an inevitability.

It is kinda in the wrong forum. The different colors symbolize different ranks.

If your wondering what the colors mean on elites, there is a thread where someone posted all of there ranks. It's pretty recent and its called "Elite default names".

Elites come in Blue = rookie, Red = Experienced, Invisibile = many might not categorize them as different than other, low rank elites, but i do, because once or twice in the Trutch and Reconciliation killed an invisibile elite, and his armor color was a mix of blue and white, Black = Veteran and Gold = Field Commanders (this is top rank).
Grunts come in yellow = rookie, Organge = experienced, Black = veterans (highest rank)
Jackals come in Blue and Orange. They are nearly exactly the same in my opinion, both suck. But if you go right down to it, blue is rookie and orange is veteran.

Grunts:
White - Workers/Labourers (maybe)
Orange - Rookie
Red - Veteran
Black - Special Ops
Jackals:
Blue Shield - Rookie
Yellow Shield - Veteran
Elites:
Blue - Rookie
Red - Veteran
Silver - Infiltrator/Stealth Troop *
Black - Special Ops/Commando
Gold - Commander
? (unknown colour as not seen yet) - Imperial Guard aka Protectors of the Prophets
Hunters, Engineers, Brutes(I think) do not have ranks
Prophets do have ranks, there are minor and high Prophets but I deduce this is shown by robes and decoration, not colour as such.

* In the Covenant Speech the stealth Elites are known as Ossoonas which means 'Eye of the Prophet' and are selected for secret missions, usually

They we're Grunts with white masks, I don't know about their armour but as they appeared to be unharmed and we're doing manual labor I would say they are of the lowest rank, ie lesser than the Orange armoured Grunts

I sort of agree with you but I think they have to do all the floor mopping and crap like that.
They probably also assist the Engineers with heavier equipment.

ok ranks of covenant? I got you down right there bro.
Grunts:
-white= technicians of sorts (only seen in first strike)
-orange= the n00b grunts so to say
-red= experienced grunts but still pretty n00bish
-black= spec ops grunts, these are the only grunts you should worry about
Elites:
-blue= n00bish elites, they have too much pride, so exploit it
-red= veteran elites, think of a strategy before messing with these guys
-gray/white= camo elites, there shields are down so just spam with the AR to get them
-black= Spec ops elites, these guys will own you with there fast reflexes unless you think first
-gold= Commander elites, the generals so to say, they have overshields on for there normal shields

thats it from my old halo knowledge banks
