Subject: What do you miss most from Halo: CE?

I've been playing Halo since before the days of Halo 2. I was disappointed with the newer Halo games, simply because they lacked some of the basic elements that made Halo: CE a unique and fun game.
One thing that I miss is the ability of the plasma pistol to be a match with the other weapons. The blasts from the plasma pistol were not only stronger, but they stunned enemies, making the weapon somewhat deadly. In addition, the plasma pistol had a rate of fire that was as fast as your finger could pull the trigger.
Yes, the thing that I miss most is the stun from any plasma weapons. I'm not sure why Bungie took it out of the game. Does anybody remember thwarting tanks with the ghost?
The other thing that I miss is the health system. This change messed up a lot of the basic elements of game play. In Halo, if you get hit with a grenade at full health, you lost your shield, and have only 3 bars of health. This means that if you get hit with another grenade, even with full shields, you die.
The last thing that I miss is the continuity of the story. In order to truly understand what's going on in Halo 2 or 3, you;ll need to read the books. Halo, however, offers a clear explanation of the events that proceed through campaign.

What elements from Halo: CE would give Halo 3 the same, unique feel?

The long, hard to beat legendary difficulty, Halo 3 feels like normal or even easy when you compare the difficulties to CE.

I agree with your basic stuff.

The health bar added more depth to gameplay, enticing a player to think about fight, so they would come out unscathed rather than charge in and come out with a bit if health that regenerates.

Legendary is a pain in Halos 2 & 3. I find the enemies aren't so much a challenge, as obstacles. Annoying, repetitiious obstacles.

The weapons, most of them anyways, in the next two games are pointless. Most are never even touched, unless players are making it harder by specializing. In the first game, every weapon was effective, and filled a specific role.

Fall damage. 'Nuff said.

all of these contribute to enjoyable gameplay, but when you mess with these, you create too many compromises and change the formula for gameplay.

What I miss most would definitely be the MA5B Assault Rifle that sounded like firecracker bundles going off. I despise the stripped down one in Halo 3 that is more like an SMG and sounds like somebody shooting a pillow with an airsoft gun.

The replay value. The vast environments. The enemies. The difficulties of this game. Halo 3 is VERY easy on Legendary/Heroic.

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

Well Halo 1 PC had the most amazing levels ive seen in Halo yet, and i miss the Pistol :'(

1. Fall Damage
2. The Pistol
3. Map simplicity
4. Plasma Stun
5. Health
6. No Dual Wielding (Not too bad in Halo 3)
7. Touch flag return (rather than having a flag return range)
8. Flag carriers being able to drive (rather than having a non-working option for this)
9. Vehicles that didn't despawn/respawn

I like Halo 3, but it's much more mainstream now. It's just not as good. It's disappointing to see what happened to the series. They have way too many weapons, grenades, and vehicles. They've tried too hard to balance the weapons, and they produced a different kind of balance. This gives each weapon some kind of purpose, whether it deserves one or not. They intentionally reduced the purpose of other weapons.

Then there's equipment. It seems entirely unnecessary. Then they made it more pointless than it already was. They nerfed the trip mine beyond use, and it's not very common now either. They removed the radar jammer and flare from matchmaking. There are three common pieces of equipment. The bubble shield is essentially a portable shield door. The power drain is pretty much the same as a charged plasma pistol shot. Then we have the regen. It's annoying, but at least it has a unique purpose. Even if it were all available, it seems the purpose of equipment is just to be annoying. It seems like they added equipment, because they didn't know what to do with the x button. The new controller provided an opportunity for a more intuitive interface, and the x button was then unused. Equipment was born. Separating the action and reload buttons seems like a better solution to the extra button problem to me.

The way it was just so new.
The story was new and engrossing.
The environments were like none you had ever seen before.
The levels that were just fun to play over and over and over (AotCR).
It really is an amazing game.

Agreed.

To add, I really loved how on Legendary you could be aggressively pursued.

The Halo 3 Martyrdom

The melee-dead-bodies thing where you hit the Grunt's and Elites and the blood comes out. I always loved making disaster scenes. Fun. XD The Elites were also really Elitey. They didn't take cover or do anything too smart, like the books. Halo 2 and Halo 3 were really smart aliens. Elites were also sexy.

A lot of things, but that's what makes it different, I bought Halo CE after I bought Halo 3 and still loved it. I'm only 13. But I still remember playing Halo CE at a friends and loving it. That's why I bought it, and beat it.

EVRYTHING!!

Loose talk is noose talk.

The really difficult legendary. Halo 1's legendary is massively different from the 2 sequels. In Halo 2, you had over 10 useless weapons and only a few that were "useable" (the BR, carbine, plasma pistol, both snipers, and the energy sword (PP+SMG combo)). All of Halo 1's weapons had some purpose. Halo 3s weapons were a mere rehash of Halo CEs, though I like the upgrades some weapons got.

The flood also changed dramatically. In Halo 1, they were really the "Flood", an enemy which you had to hold your ground against. It was an enemy that never stopped until you, the player died. In Halo 2, the Flood stopped being the "1,000,000 zombie infestation that's going to kill you" and became the "single Combat Form wielding a shotgun that kills you in one hit. In Halo 3, the Flood became "Super Resistant Zombies that snipe you from halfway across the map."

That's my 2 cents.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.

The health bar, the pistol, and all the cool map glitches

  • 08.03.2008 1:10 AM PDT

I would have to say the pistol. I wish they would have kept it almost the same for all three games, but it was different in everyone. I miss having a secondary weapon that could actually fire at a decent rate with range thats not as far as a battle rifle but not as short as a shotgun. For some reason I just don't care for the Halo two and three pistols.
