The new sniper rifle has a recoil so that you have to adjust your aim every time you fire. That will make it a skill based weapon. It would be cool if when the sniper rifle wasn't zoomed they turned up the auto aim a little more. It would make it more effective at closer ranges and balance out the recoil they added.
I hope they take that auto aim out, at least in multiplayer so people have to learn to get better with their skills and not rely on the little aimming assistant... It never really benefitted me in halo, it only hindered me

DUDE. ITS HARD ENOUGH TO AIM WITH THE SNIPER AS IS considering its FOUR ROUND clip, contrails that tell the enemy where you are, the stupid lead. AAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! I hate the sniper rifle,and now its going to SUCK even MORE
That's what skill is all about, learning how to use each weapon effectively and properly...
Besides, that gun in Halo was a joke to people that learned real sniper skills in the origional games that had sniper rifles that were, simple put... a pain in the ass, but once learned you were considered a godly sniper.

1) The sniper is pretty much perfect as it is in Halo...who suggested that it would have auto aim at close range is a dumb idea, no offense. That is the whole point of the sniper rifle is to destroy at a long range. You don't see the shotgun zooming in do you? That is because it is a short range weapon. Different weapons for different situations.
2) Auto aim requires abolutely no skill to use, whatsoever. Maybe for Halo PC, but that would be it. It shouldn't even be thought of as an option in Halo 2.
3) I think that the 4 round clip and the trails make it balanced enough. If you don't kill them in one shot, and you let them know where you are, it is not the gun's fault, it is yours for letting them know:)
4) The recoil would be very annoying, in my opinion. I agree since the levels are that much bigger it would give the other players more of a chance...yet the sniper is already a skill-based weapon. It is hard to say how it is going to be finalized in Halo 2.

The sniper rifle in Halo doesn't require nearly as much skill is it should... It should be a pain in the ass like it was in Quake Team Fortress so it actually feels like skill when you kill people with it. Though, it was still very useful in Quake Team Fortress once you learned how to use it properly... This sniper rifle feels more like the beginners license to sniping in FPS's to me...
But I have to admit, the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark/Command & Conquer Renegade sniper rifles were the down right worst in FPS history...
Goldeneyes and Perfect Darks were down right a waste of time.... and if I used one it was more so as a close combat weapon...
With how they did Renegades sniper rifles, in sniper matches people used them as close combat weapons (people use them like they were Assault rifles), then that visual glitch totally killed any "fun" aspect you could get out of their sniper rifles...
