In the original Halo, the energy sword "turns off." Take the example of killing a gold elite wielding the sword. It disintegrates and presumably the little handle piece is destroyed or rendered useless in the explosion/implosion. Also, in the E3 2003 demo for Halo 2, the elites that land in the pods "turn on" their swords. So, now in Halo 2, are we to assume that the weapon is broken and doesn't turn off any more? Or perhaps that the little pommel has been upgraded and is now indestructable? Whatever the case, I don't like how the whole sword, blade "turned on", sits on the ground (see E3 2004 demo). [What if someone steps on it, that'd be a nasty cut]. Perhaps this is all still on the editting table. Additionally, Should the sword have a battery with a finite life like the flashlight for instance? Your intelligent thoughts and comments are appreciated.

To clarify, I understand that you can swap the sword for your other weapon and then switch weapons which, in effect, is "turning it off". I am pointing out the fact that it seems stay "on" when it's not held by anyone.

i completely agree with you... but i dont think it should have a battery, it should just be "turned on/off"

the only problem is, it is hard to find when it is off and just a handle...like in multiplayer

The only reason the sword disintegrated in Halo 1 was because they didnt let us use it.

Yes, I understand the legitimacy of not being able to wield it in Halo. I merely meant that the sword has undergone some changes and I wondered how that was going to be implemented functionally into Halo 2.

Yes, but the Fuel Rod Guns the Grunts had in "The Maw" did not destroy, but you still could not use them. Why would you want to turn the sword off? And it would be very hard to find a tiny sword handle on the ground in multiplayer... I think the reason the Elites "turned on" their swords when they stepped out of the pods is because it would be kind of dangerous to "crash land" with the equivalent of a light saber in your hand. =P

Yes, I agree, the pommel might be difficult to locate laying on the ground by itself. But after all, it is a pretty remarkable/powerful weapon. Perhaps being difficult to find is ok?

I do believe the fuel rod guns (a.k.a. green goo gun) did in fact explode in "the Maw." I'm afraid I missed your point about that unless you are implying that the fuel rod gun might be in Halo 2. Good point about the crash landing with your tray tables and energy swords stored properly away.

Perhaps they turn on once and then they're stuck in the on position?

I'm not against it being on if it were on a stand or alter of sorts that powered the weapon indefinitely. That'd be ok I suppose. Makes for a good holy grail.

i think that if you find it on the ground it should be retracted but maybe a blinking light or somthing to make it a little more noticable. and i think that when you pick it up or switch to it it should have the wzzzzp sound and the animation of the sword turning on like when you switch to the pistol you have to pull on the top to put a bullet in the chamber. when you die if you had it out it sould stay out but if you had it hidden it should only be the handel with the blinking light ot whatnot. and no it shouldnt have a battery.

I think when the person dies, it should blow up, like a failsafe so they can't get it, just like in SP, so they have to get a new one. I also think it should be turned on/off, after all, kinda hard to sneak around with a 3 foot glowing sword on your arm.

Maybe we should ask Frankie how this works....

They have a system for it now, and some users must of experianced this in the E3 demo.

e3 video showed just putting the sword away without doing anything but that may have changed

I think that it is not just a handle..but it is "off" when on the ground. In the e3 04 demo, when he picks it up, he turns it on...but it was not retracted while on the ground.
That would work well...you can see it...but you still have to turn it "on."

I'm not talking about switching weapons. I'm talking about when you drop it for another weapon, or you are killed, or even before anyone finds it.

Always keep in mind that this weapon is only good close range, so we cant make it too weak or no one will use it, even close range. I say just on and off, no battery. And if there is a batter, recargable when off.

he is right. the sword is just a stick, but it turns on when you take it out. they just made it like that so you can easily find it as everyone said before.

I've been wondering of how the energy sword relates to the books, in the books, they talk of the safety on the sword, making it unusable after it turns off or something like that. However, it appears that they will not have that because it can be picked up and used again. Anyway, back to the question, I think it should not have a rechargable battery or anything like that. It is too close ranged to make it even more hard to use. We don't want to end up with another sucky weapon again like the needler (sorry to any of you who are good and/or like the needler).
