It should definetly have a battery. Every other weapon has ammo, so should the sword.

The following sequence entered my mind:
Slash! slash! Moahaha I'm unstoppable with this sword! Slash! click! click! Damn! I'm out of swings with the sword!

I think that it is not just a handle..but it is "off" when on the ground. In the e3 04 demo, when he picks it up, he turns it on...but it was not retracted while on the ground.
That would work well...you can see it...but you still have to turn it "on."

Maybe when the sword is on the ground it has a kind of "piliot light" to keep it ready to use.

if you watch the extened vid it made a sound when he picked it up

like it was powering up

as if it has its shape but not its "energy"?

ok, first of all its a fail safe. When it somehow detects that the owner was killed, it becomes permanently useless (read First Strike) same goes with the fuel rods, they self destruct so the opponent cant use them (the Fuel rod guns that hunters have are welded into their armor so it dosent have fail safe) In Halo : CE the fail safe for the Fuel rod gun was not active in multiplayer. I belive it will be the same thing in halo 2 multiplayer.

Oh and about the elites "turning on" the swords I guess that if you squeeze the grip hard as you would when you go into a fight, the sword turns off. If you loosen your grip, it turns off. Something like that

I think that it should stay off when no one is using it, but it has that blueish glow at the ends of the handle like in the sequence at the end of the E3 demo when the elites land in those pods. Then with that you could see it on the ground of something. Also I think you should press X to turn it on/off since you dont need to reload the energy sword.

Just my 2 cents

Yes, but the Fuel Rod Guns the Grunts had in "The Maw" did not destroy, but you still could not use them. Why would you want to turn the sword off? And it would be very hard to find a tiny sword handle on the ground in multiplayer... I think the reason the Elites "turned on" their swords when they stepped out of the pods is because it would be kind of dangerous to "crash land" with the equivalent of a light saber in your hand. =P

haha ya, it would be funny...push all tables into upright positions..hand food nipples to the digital stewardess, and make sure all weapons of mass destruction are safely tucked away, but ready for use! thank you for flying Air Covenant and we hope to see you again!

*elite* DAMN! i dropped mine! =P

I know what you're talking about. Maybe that is the final draft for the sword. Who knows for sure? (Bungie)

If you could turn the sword on and off you could incorparate stealth elements, its kinda hard not to notice a huge glowing sword, but if it was off you could run up behind someone turn on the sword and then ouch, theyre out of it

That's an interesting point too. If you could turn it on and off at will, you'd be far more dangerous. Carrying a glow stick in a dark tunnel trying to sneak up on someone is mildly difficult. Of course, you could just switch weapons to hide it will you're attempting to be stealthy.

I like the idea of it dying. Flickering for a bit just before it does so. Suddenly you're not the biggest and badest in tight quarters anymore. Maybe it's just solar powered?

The little blue glowy bits on the pommel of the sword would make it a resonable target to find once dropped. The elites that landed in those pods did have that feature on theirs.

Thanks for that completely useless comment. Care to explain what exactly you were trying to convey there?

Keep in mind the sword is only an advantage at very close ranges, so it does not need to have a battery to keep in balanced... My guess is there is only one energy sword in most levels...it is unlikely to find them laying around like plasma pistols. They probably respawn after a certain amount of time if they are dropped, like vehicles. I am almost positive the sword stays on at all times. Notice in the E3 demo when the sword was picked up, it was "on" on the ground, and the sword was "on" when you find it in the turning wheel in Zanzibar. I do not think it will be possible to "turn it off", although you will be able to holster it. Why walk around with a sword handle when you could holster the sword and pull out the Battle Rifle?

Another idea: Is it possible to dual wield the plasma sword? I highly doubt it (in the same category as dual-weilding rocket launchers), although it would be nice to have TWO plasma swords (if there are two per level), or have a plasma sword for close range and a Battle Rifle for closing in...

I don't believe you'll be able to dual wield with the sword (of course that is purely speculation). There is an earlier post about that if you are interested.

I do not think you will be able to either. Don't you wish somebody from this forum could PLAY the Zanzibar multiplayer demo, and try out all these things?! All the articles written by people that have played the demo didn't mention half of the information everybody here is dying to figure out.

I know I sure would like to have that opportunity. I want just one kill with that sword. Of course, once I started it would be hard to stop.

i think the covie sword should be like a lightsaber it doesn't run off batteries and when you switch for a sword to a gun it goes down then when you switch back it powers back up
