As my signature indirectly states, I'm getting a new comupter. And sooner than I thought, too. I just missed my chance to buy an 802.11g router and two PCI wireless-g cards all for $30 after rebates. So I'm gonna hafta stick to a wired LAN

So..If I wanted to connect two comupters together on this LAN, would I need to go out and get a router, hub, or switch, or can I just have a single 2-way network cable hooked between them as long as I don't add another computer to the mix? Thanks in advanced.

as b says, all you need to conedt one computer to anothern is a crossover cable. you only need a switch if you want to conect more than two computers together.

Heyyo,

Yeah, I suggest for like, 2-4 computers to use a router if you have a high speed connection such as DSL or Cable Internet, otherwise whichever one's plugged into the net, that computer would have to be on for the other to have acess to the net. If you have a router? plug the wan into there, and you'd only need to worry if the router's plugged in, not another computer. ;)

Yeah, but if you don't wanna use a router? np, just have a computer with 2 ethernet ports, n' make sure you setup your computer right so it knows to use your LAN connection to acess the net.

yeh, u can get a router for abt £10 nowdays but crossovers are expensive u weant it to last and be long.
i have wired LAN in my house, 2 pc in the study/office and one in my room. i have a router for up 2 ten peps but i wont need wireless cos my rooms next to the study.
or u could just use a second ethernmet card, but thats confusing to use when u got two, and not as fast as a router.
if ur in the uk i can send u a spare one, but i dont wana pay 4 the postage fee.

wait wait wait wait wait.... 2 ethernet cards? in 1 computer? I don't get it. I have 2 ethernet cards between my two computers, but I can't buy another one for each. Is that what you mean?
(oh yeah, neither of the computers would have Internet access and this computer is too far to run a wire to and all I would be tapping into is AOL dial-up, so I'm not so worried about online multiplayer)
