-------------none of the characters or places in my story that are mentioned in the Halo story belong to me, save for the ones I have created myself-----------------

This story revolves around an Elite Honor Guard that was ignored by all others. Protecting the Prophet of Regret was the only job he knew, that is until his master's incident with the Master Chief. The last thing he expected was to go from guarding a demon in a chair, to becoming the hero he never imagined possible.

These parts may seem exciting or boring, but thats because the fighting starts in Chapter 2. These 2 are kind of explaining the characters feelings.

---- ----------Prolouge--------------

I Regret Nothing

I admit to myself now that I was a coward, afraid to face the greatest warrior alive. All I did was watch as the noble Prophet of Regret was being massacred by the Demon. What could I do? Stand and fight as all others of my kind had tried,

and failed?

No. Any attempt to stop the Demon would ruin everything. My intent was no longer to protect Regret, but to flee.

"Scared, Demon? Are you afraid of me? Afraid that I will wipe you and your cursed race from existence?" Bellowed the Prophet, a blinding smile spreading across his face. Suddenly, there was a loud crunch, followed by an irritating groan from Regret. The Demon had landed his fist upon the holy Prophet's face!

I couldn't watch anymore

I crept out from behind the pillar I had been hiding behind, very slowly, so as not to draw attention to myself. Screams from dying Elites could be heard throughout the giant room. Grunts ran around in fear of being slaughtered, Regret and the Demon were battling it out down on the ground floor, and I was watching it all. Watching my race being defeated.

I ran.

I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, across the room, past the Prophet and Demon, and up the stairs to the exit.

"Coward! Coward!" bellowed a grunt, covered in blue blood.

Still I ran.

I ran until I felt something I hadn't felt for a long time. Something that really got my attention.

I felt the Holy Prophet of Regret's eyes on my back. It was like the second he gazed upon my red and gold armor, leaving him in his time of need, he knew that all was lost. I couldn't gather up enough strength to look my master in the eyes.

"Fool," I muttered under my breath. I cast aside my gold attachments and left the room, with Regrets last scream echoing behind me.

Chapter 1

Adrift

For days it haunted me, the death of the Prophet. Would I take the blame for his death, simply because I was the last elite alive that was in that tower? Would Truth have me executed for betrayal against a Covenant Hierarch? What was worse, the only place I could thnk about this was in a lone Banshee, Soaring just above the ring world.

My escape had been out of pure luck, just as the temple was about to be destroyed, I escaped in a Banshee docked on the backside of the building.

I sighed. What had I gotten myself into?

I never wanted to join the Covenant. I had joined out of fear and confusion. I thought the Covenant was a religious group of races that could pray to the mighty gods and listen to sermons together. I never wanted to be part of the bloody war. No, all I wanted now was to be back on my homeworld, before the war with the Humans.

I soon approached High Charity after flying in circles for 3 days. I could already feel the sting of Truth's gaze as I landed in the hanger.

There was much confusion , with several Phantoms taking off, infantry scurrying around, and Truth broadcasting a message over the entire station

" A covenant hierarch was recently attacked by the demon. The Prophet of Regret was indeed...

"You. Major," interupted a SpecOps Officer, "Come with me,"

I gazed around for a moment, looking for the red armored Elite Major that the officer was talking about. I then realized that he was talking to me, simply because without the gold attachments, I looked like a normal red Elite.

"Yes sir,"

The Sangheili take full responsiblity for the assassination. Any remaining members of the battle will be punish...

"I cannot stand the ignorance of that creature. Always blaming our race for everything!" The officer said in a voice that only I could hear.

"I agree. It is most unfair that we were accused of failing our job to protect him." I said, trying to be as polite and agreeing as possible.

Suddenly, we both stopped "Where did you just come from anyway?" He asked, a look of suspicion in his eyes. What was I to tell him? If i told him I was in the tower, I would be killed!

"The other side of the station," I said without thinking, hoping he would believe me.

He nodded, and continued walking.

I followed him down a series of hallways, accompanied by many other Elites, Brutes, Grunts, and Jackals. Finally we arrived at the Armory.

I looked at him, baffled. What was this all about?

"Grab your weapons, get ready for combat," said the officer, then he left the room, leaving only me with my mouth wide open, staring at the weapons in awe. I lifted my head to the heavens.

"Ugggghhhhhhhh," I growned "After all of what I've just been through, he wants me to fight?"

I picked up a Plasma Rifle, a Needler, and 4 Plasma Grenades. I gritted my teeth and walked out the door, angry at myself for not telling the officer the truth, and avoiding another bloody battle. But there was no turning back now. The battle had started, and I had only one thing in mind. Don't Die.

I never predicted what would happen next, never thought about what would happen that next day on Delta Halo.

To be Continued...

Please tell me what you think this was just for fun so I really don't mind if you didn't like it, but I would like to know anyway!

This is interesting, I like the idea of a Sangheili who runs and the questions that opens up. Is he a coward? Does he simply not believe? I hope you keep going with it, I'm looking forward to finding out what his story is.

I do have one bit of criticism, though. He had no choice about "joining the Covenant". Yes, he has to speak the Writ of Union, but saying "no thanks!" isn't really an option. He's Covenant whether he wants to be or not. The option, though, is whether he leaves Sanghelios to fight. I really like the notion of a member of a proud warrior race who isn't really a warrior at heart, it's different. A suggestion to you would be to answer this question for yourself and in the story: there are civilian Sangheili who stay on Sanghelios. Why isn't your protagonist one of them? Is his father a high-ranked warrior who expected his son to live on in his tradition? Did he initially want to fight but changed his mind for some reason? He could have tried for a ceremonial post, but for some reason, he didn't.

Chapter 2

Frontline

On board the Phantom taking us to the ring, several Elites showed their thoughts about Truth's broadcast.

"Full responsibility? Isn't it the Honor Guards' duty to protect the Prophets? Why should we be the ones taking the blame? Our infantry was doing all we could to stop the Demon!" shouted an Ultra.

"Calm, Kovalee. All we can do now is show the Hierarchs that we are their greatest warriors," replied a SpecOps Elite.

Then, the one called Kovalee, spoke his real thoughts.

"Cowards, the Honor Guards were. If they're job was to protect the Hierarchs at all costs, why is Regret dead? Obviously they are not so honorable."

Suddenly I felt a powerful urge to attack Kovalee. What did he know about being an Honor Guard?

Calm down I thought to myself, taking a deep breath.

Hours later we landed in the snowy peeks of Delta Halo.

"My brothers, recently we have been unfairly blamed for Regret's death. But now, brothers, we shall regain our honor, and continue our quest to salvation!" shouted the SpecOps officer that had brought me to the armory.

A battle cry came from every soldier there, except me.

Every squad was made up of 2 elites, 8 grunts, and 2 jackals. My partner just happened to be the one I hated most. Kovalee.

"We will go Southeast of the mountain, toward the passage into the valley," said Kovalee, apparently leading our group.

We parted ways with the rest of the crew, and began our march. But we hadn't gotten far when gunshots were heard just over the hill.

"Humans! We shall burn them all!" shouted Kovalee, drawing his energy sword.

So we changed directions, going south of our original position.

A grunt named Godel crept over to the bush and spied down.

"Enemies! Enemies here!"

Before I had time to draw my weapon there were already shot rounds hitting the rock I was behind.

Kovalee leaped over the rock. "Engage!"

All 11 of them ran down the hillside firing and slashing at Humans. I stayed behind.

"God Dammit, that ones got a sword!" shouted one of them, cowering behind a ruin.

Watching Kovalee fight was entertaining. He slashed and stabbed at everything, going crazy. Everytime a shot round was fired, he merely targeted that enemy and sent him sailing across the floor.

Four grunts had already fallen. One Marine, who was being called Anderson, was taking out all of the low level infantry with a weapon Humans call 'shotgun'

"Anderson, the one with the sword!" shouted a dark skinned soldier, laying flat on his back covered in blood. Sure enough, behind him Kovalee came sprinting from behind a pillar.

"BEHIND YOU!" I shouted, not thinking at all. i quickly ducked behind the rock, hearing a shotgun fire and a screaming Kovalee.

"Alien scum!" Anderson shouted, stepping on the silver armor in triumph.

My heart started to beat incredibly fast. I had just aided in the death of my partner.

I stood up and started walking backwards, hoping to be unnoticed, then broke into a full sprint the other way. I had watched my squad get massacred without firing one shot. I kept running straight into the snowy distance. It was getting dark now, and I had no idea what to do, Should I go back and wait at the ship, or should I just let myself die out in the frost. I never had time to think when 3 Human vehicles skidded right in front of me.

"Please don't shoot!" I screamed, casting away my plasma rifle and needler from my belt.

I got down on my knees and waited. Three turrets were pointed at my face. A soldier got out of the drivers seat and stood behind me. His next words amazed me.

"Thank you,"

I looked up. It was Anderson!

"We're not going to kill you, but you're going to answer some questions," he said, stretching out his hand. I grabbed on to it and pulled myself up.

"Get in the Warthog. We've got some work to do before we get back to base," he told me, commanding the other 2 'Warthogs' to be on their way.

End Transmission

Now you see why the title is Heretic Or Hero? Because the Character (whose name I mention in the next chapter) is forced out of fear to join an alliance w/ the humans. In the next chapter you'll find out how this alliance goes over with other Covenant species.
