Heyyo,
Well, the higher the framerate? the less strain on your eyes cause of a more smoother framerate. So cranking a refresh rate to the max instead of using the default 60Hz is reccomended. It also lowers the odds of headaches. I'm amazed you diddn't beat me to thais one there SLD. ;)
Another good reason is for games. If you limit your framerate it won't use the extra frame buffers to start calculating ahead of time cause that's pretty impossible to calculate cause we're just too random n' such, so leaving your refresh rate high's a good thing. Another one is it'll lower the odds of "Screen-Tearing." This happens when your videocard tries to refrest your monitor faster than its current refresh rate. so a game going 120F/S while your monitor's set to 60Hz (aboot 62F/S I think..) is really unhealthy, and can cause weird distortion lines on your monitor. I don't think it'll damage the monitor, but it puts extra strain on the eyes n' such.. so make sure you have the right drivers for your monitor (so your comp knows its limits) and then crank those refresh rates. Your eyes n' brain will thank you. ;)
[EDIT]
Oh, flatscreens use a diff method of displaying images. CRT's (Cathode Ray Tubes) fire electrons at a phosphorus layer which then emits colors n' such. (the higher the screen rez, the more electrons it needs to shoot n' calculate, which's why screen rez highly affects your framerate).
Now, for LCD's (Liquid Crystal Display) heat the crystals in the monitor to emmit colors. Passive matrix displays do this much slower than active matrix displays. So if you buy an LCD? buy an active matrix display. Passive's will give you a lot of blur. Dont trust what the box says, trust what your eye's see. Cause in the end, ain't that all that matters? That's what I thought. ;)
So yeah, if space ain't an issue, I reccomend CRT's. They're cheaper (usually at least $100 cdn cheaper than the LCD equivalent of a good CRT monitor), and since they're outta production since LCdD's the future? get one, they might become a good antique. Hey, I saw a Voodoo 6 128mb AGP videocard sell for $3000 USD. The guy bought it for $200USD when 3DFX went outta business.. intense eh?
