I downloaded the huge 264 MB file and I tried to start Halo Editing Kit and when I try it comes up with a tutorial Web Page. It talks about 3ds MAX is 3d Max a software program used with a CD? If it is how much is it?

I'm certifiable.

The HEK is actually a version of the tools used to build the game; as such, it RAWKS but it assumes that you already have a 3D editing suite.

3DSMax is the professional suite used by Bungie (and many other game companies) to create the models for their games. If you bought a copy it'd cost roughly $1500! However, some very smart folks figured out a way to use GMax instead; GMax is the free-for-download version of 3DSMax. You can find out more about GMax at http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/ or by Googling "gmax".

The best place to find info on the HEK is over on the Gearbox website; http://www.gearboxsoftware.com. Their forums have some great people, including the guy who wrote the CHIMP script that takes level designs out of GMax and converts them to the format the HEK needs.

Feel free to ask more questions, if you need to, but your best source of help is the Gearbox site.

gmax is free. You will need to go to cortona.org to get the gmax patch for the hek. Its easy to use once youve done tutorials.
