I'm trying to decide between buwing Halo 1 and Halo 2 for my PC, but the whole silver vs gold account has me confused. If you only have a silver account, what are your limitations for H2V as opposed to if you have a gold account? Is the multiplayer worth it compared to Halo 1 if you only have a silver account? I don't want to be spending $50 JUST to play Halo 2 online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.

Gold on Games for WIndows Live is free, you got nothing to worry about! :)

Really? It is? I read somewhere that you have to pay 50 bucks for it.

Ok then, so which do you reccomend I get for my PC, Halo 1 or 2.

Which has better multiplayer and which has a bigger online community?

There are two types of XBL--or, in this case, Windows Live accounts... but they're the same thing, actually. One's just for the Xbox, one's for the PC... but anyway--accounts:

Silver, and Gold.

You can play Halo 2 PC online, even with just a Silver account. The limitations are that you can't host your own server if you're on a Silver account, and can't join custom user-made maps =[

There's also a few other "Gold-only" features. But they're completely worthless. Don't even worry about it.

Even if you just have a Silver account, the "Gold-only" features are friggen' pitiful/useless anyway. All you'll need is the server browser. Find a game, then have fun.

--

Also, Microsoft announced they plan to make all Gold features available to all members, not just people who pay for their Gold subscription =]

Bottom line: Just don't worry. You'll be able to play the game either way. And as I said, any "Gold-only" features they have in the game are completely worthless.

EDIT: Also, there are some games where you have to have a Gold subscription to play online. Halo 2 Vista isn't one of them. Like I said, the only "benefit" are some crappy features nobody gives a crap about. And are so abysmal, they're not worth even mentioning.

So should I get Halo 1 or Halo 2.

Which has better multiplayer and which has a bigger online community?

Halo 1 PC, hands-down. No comparison.

If you want to play Halo 2, you'd be better off getting it for the Xbox instead.

But regarding your question. Halo 1 PC has a huge community. Last time I was on, I think I saw like 400 servers. It's a very healthy community =]

You will not regret this choice. Believe me.

Also, if anyone else has input about which is better (although I'm leaning towards Halo 1, because of the community) please say so!

And this is my last question. Will Halo PC work fine on Vista? I have the demo and it works fine, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

EDIT: I actually have another question. Is the variety of multiplayer maps on Halo PC good? Because I played Halo on my friends Xbox, and I found it annoying that most of the maps were like cement bunkers. Is it any different on the PC? Are there more outdoor maps?

Halo 1 PC works absolutely fine with Vista =]

Halo 2 Vista is still exactly the same game as Halo 2 for the Xbox. It's just that the port is really bad/frustrating at times. And it also does have two new maps that H2Xbox doesn't have. But I would hardly say that makes it worth the $50 price-tag.

Whereas, Halo 1 PC is a great port [Halo 1 wasn't built from the ground-up to support an online environment, so the port can't be faulted for various online issues... still a solid online experience, though]., sells for $15 - $20, and has a huge community =]

But like I said, Halo 1 and 2 for the PC are ports of their Xbox counter-parts. And you have to realize that Halo 1 & 2 PC are both very different games.

But bleh, whatever. I've played a crap-load of both Halo 1 and 2 PC, and Halo 1 PC was infinitely more enjoyable for me =] Same can go for H2PC. If you look past it all [and I'll see if I can find you that big, fat article carefully depicting why it's a very poor port =P], you can still get in a good game of Halo 2 in the end =]

But I'm sure the price, the large community, and the wealth of awesome user-created maps are worth it =]

[and, uh, sorry if I seem incoherent right now. I'm so tired, and can barely think >-< I is are am bad with sentence making now]

Hope that helps ^-^

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Yes there are bonus maps which are all big and out doors. The only problem you may have with Vista is "decals" which you can shut off in the video settings.

Also, Halomaps.org just passed 3400 unique files of custom content, most of them maps. That's a lot more than you'll ever see in halo 2.

Althought I haven't played Halo 2 Vista, I can definately say Halo PC is worth the small pricetag, considering the features you get with a solid game. Also, if you get Halo PC, don't forget to download Custom Edition, offering you custom made maps (you'll have to find and download them from websites, however, and place them in your maps folder).

But...

for the price, might be different for me in the UK, you could easily save up a bit longer and get both.

But if it's a one or the other choice... Halo PC. Just an all-round classic.

On average, how many people still play Halo 1 & 2 online? Not like both combined, but each.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever
